Anyone have issues with the Odyssey AGM batteries?

I bought two for the buggies. First one died and was unrecoverable from just sitting in my buggy with no wires attached. After arguing with them they replaced it. Worked well while the buggy was being wired and after in the garage. Worked great January. Tried to fire up the buggy this past weekend and battery is toast.

Tested it and it’s at 6V.

The Odyssey in mini buggy seems to not want to hold a charge as well.

They are not cheap batteries and the brackets are made for that specific battery, so changing the battery out for a different type isn’t the most ideal.

Anyone else have issues with the Odyssey batteries?

Ever since they sold out and aren't made in the state any more, they've gone down the shitter. That being said, I replaced the two in my CUCV because of the battery box as well...hopefully these last longer. I even have an Optima battery charger. If nothing else they make is worth a damn, that charger sure is. I love that thing!

I even have the Odyssey AGM specific charger. Over priced but needed a new one and didn’t want Odyssey telling me there was a charger issue. Still no worky.

My last set were the same way...even their charger couldn't bring them back. I just forked over the money for new ones. I think it was around 400 for both from Advance Auto on a commercial account.

Ever since they sold out

That was like 20 years ago.

No problems with any of mine. It sounds like they have a parasitic draw that's pulling them down over time. Parallel the bad battery with a good one and charge the pair with a dumb charger. That should get the bad battery up to a point where you can put it through a regeneration cycle.

Then check to see what the draw is with the vehicle off. I'll bet there's a 5-10w draw.

There is a small draw from the intercom radio but it was just fine between November to January. Started and ran just fine. Now, less time and it’s screwed up.

I’ll pull them this weekend and see what I can do with both.

You've sulfated them with the small low draw.
Par boost them like Shawn said...or put them on a good charger. Something like a SENS Energenius will do it all itself

Ok. So having a small draw potentially caused this issue. I guess I need to isolate that small draw from these batteries? Are AGMs in need of a little more TLC regarding small draws? Maybe I made the wrong choice of battery?

Small draw followed by impartial recharge

A regular flooded cell lead acid would already be garbage. Likewise for letting it sit for years with no maintenance charge.

The first battery was less than a year old and this replacement is less than 6 months old. While the buggy may be old and decrepit, the batteries have been reasonably new.

Well, just as a matter of comparison, Cyd's Jeep has a regular flooded cell lead acid battery. Mine has an Odyssey. Hers gets a new battery every 6-12 months. It'll sit for two weeks, it'll crank over just fine, run it up the road, next day it's dead as a door nail. The Odyssey gets treated about the same, but it's 5 years old. Cranking over any lead acid battery once in a while without fully charging them causes sulfation. So if they're just sitting in your garage, not on a maintenance charge, and you're "checking" them by cranking them over once every two weeks, you're damaging the battery.

With a 5W draw, most anything is going to be completely dead in 3 weeks. Unconnected and sitting on the shelf, they'll be dead inside of a year.

Put both odyssey batteries in parallel and charged both up. Charger picked them up at 12V, so that’s a plus.

My buggy battery seems good at the moment. Wired in a trickle charger pigtail and have that set up now. As for mini, need to get it put back in and on trickle charger. Just not enough hours in the weekend. Spent too much time wrapping my buggy and riding it around and terrorizing the neighborhood. :D

The Dodge was at 6v on Saturday morning. It has a pair of parts house batteries that are about a year old. It's been sitting for a couple of weeks. Cyd's Jeep was at 11.5V. I drove it earlier this week. That battery was new in December.
