Perhaps a barganning chip if you decide to buy a new one...

Toyota, a Recall Leader?

It's not just older models that get recalled. Frequently car manufacturers, or the NHTSA, discover a problem with a car shortly after it's released to the public. For the past two years, BusinessWeek has compiled lists of the most recalled new cars--and for both years, the results were surprising.

While General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, and Ford led the list in 2006, Toyota saw a departure from its quality-obsessed character--recalling nearly 1.5 million vehicles worldwide, spanning every single model line produced that year.

Yea, they've kind of out grown themselves trying go get bigger than GM. Once they get their ducks in a row I'd bet the quality comes back up. If not they will go the way of GM and people will stop buying their stuff. That being said some of those recalls could be something as simple as a misprint in the owners manual. My '98 taco had that recall. First they sent me a sticker page to place over the misprinted page, then they sent me a whole new manual. I'd still put their quality over any of the big three though.

I'm not defending Toyota, and there's definitely been increasing question of the legendary Toyota quality... but one thing I have to wonder about...
Could this also partially reflect a difference in teh philosophy about when and to what extent a recall is issued? It's no secret that the Big 3 are all notorious for waiting, waiting, waitnig... waiting for it to be shown to be a real problem or all overt he press first and unavoidable that it must be recalled. On the other hand, toyota will recall minor things (see above misprint), and do it in a big way (e.g. people getting free head gasket replacements 10 years after production.
To be honet I see having recalls as not necessarily being all bad. It can also show that a company is concerned with following up on their commitment to their customers. The real question is how many *serious* recalls they have.

THIS is the answer right here. The big three will wait till the goverment SAYS they have to issue a recall, or the problem becomes such an issue that action must be taken. Most all of the big three recalls are safety related issues, that could possibly be life threatening.

Not saying Toyota doesn't have safety recalls, it's gonna happen, don't care who it is, you build that may vehicles, things are gonna get thru the cracks. THE DIFFERANCE IS most always are voluntary, and above and beyond to rectify the problem ( head gasket issue being one )

Nope, a recall isn't nessisarilly a bad thing, sometimes it is a notification of a design change ( Duramax fuel filters being a notable one, GM redesigned the filter, and offered a new replacement to ALL Dmax owners (install included ) until a certain date. one time deal. (great for the consumer a real pain in the ass to the techs) unfortunatly, the redesign wasn't much better than the original
