I am thinking out loud here mostly.

If I were to swap a 12v cummins 92-93 model year in to a 99 super duty. Would I be able to get that on the road and pass inspections.

What if the super duty was already diesel or if it was gas? Would that make a difference?

diesel is as I only pay $13 for my inspection (safety only) not sure if its b/c its diesel or GVWR, but its not sniffed at all.

any personal vehicle 3/4-ton or more is only safety, no emissions....seems like the GVWR cutoff for that is somewhere in the range of 8800 lbs I think

Nope, either (gas/diesel) should be exempt from sniff due to GVW... just a plain $13 safety inspection

hmm, interesting. I thought it was a diesel only thing as well. Not living in NC so I don't know the rules anymore since they revamped there inspection process but I thought anything that was OBD II or newer got plugged in at least? (gas engines that is)

That is what I thought I remembered:rolleyes:

I suppose I could take the truck to get inspected and see what happens-before swap.

my buddy used to have a 3/4-ton silverado gaser and it was safety inspection only as well

8500# GVW & up do not get emissions inspection regardless of year. But depending on the inspector, pretty sure the safety inspection guidelines do have some references to checking factory installed emissions components for being present. Also watch out, I have seen some inspectors just do the emissions inspection on vehicles with GVW over 8500 just to get the money and tell the customer it is necessary.

If its over 8500 it is safety only and most will not check any of the emission parts

My old inspector did this once... since he was very accommodating for my crazy schedule & never seemed to mind the lack of "missing items", I only mentioned it to make sure he knew *I knew*. OTOH, they closed the doors a few months back, so not sure if they moved locations or folded all together :(

I did a Cummins/Chevy swap in 2008 and have never had any inpsection problems. One of the biggest things is goings from a diesel to another diesel. Most people won't even notice that, but it may raise some flags if it were gas. Then again, since you're over the GVRW stipulation, you could probably get away with it. However, when I was planning to put a Cummins in the Silverado in my sig, I was going to go in the ECM and delete anything that would be deleted during the swap or fool it so it would still read, that way if they ever wanted to plug it in to the OBDII, it would still read and I would be free and clear. Worst case, call Raleigh, tell them what you're doing (just not so detailed as to shoot yourself in the foot) and if they're ok with it, they'll send you some sort of documentation (I believe) so you'll be all set and legal.

It is over 8501 lbs so it it is a safety only inspection. Most inspectors will hear the diesel and mark diesel in the computer, this can throw up a red flag at the dmv if the registration says it was originally a gas truck. Most likely since it is over the weight cut off there will not be an issue as long as you include the emissions items that would be on the truck had it come as a diesel. But you are supposed to use an engine newer than the truck when converting. I can't remember if that was only for vehicles that did not have a diesel option, one of the threads about converting to a diesel, not a build thread, has the general statute listed and linked that has this info.

Edit: In order to change the fuel listing on the registration I believe you have to go to the dmv and they inspect the changes.

it is listed on the title and registration for the vehicle that it is gas/diesel. you should be able to talk to the DMV and tell them you want to switch the truck from gas to diesel, and they can tell you the proper format...

Ken Carter went through this procedure when building his crew cab since it was originally gas. maybe he will chime in here and let you know what he did to change that legally.

After that, you should have no issues with inspections. But technically when doing any engine swap in NC, you are required to install an engine that is the same year or newer into the vehicle. Doesnt say that the newer engine is required to have the correct "fuel management system or heads" though ;)
