Old vs New style NP231

Does anyone know if you can use a new style, 1999, np231 (the one with the rubber boot on the output) in place of a NP 231 with the old style alumn tail shaft. I do not see a reason it will not work, but haven't actually tried it yet. Seems it would be an improvement. Thanks
 
Yes it will work. I had a friend who used the newer style t case on his 87 YJ behind an AX-15.

the only problem other than spline count would be spedo cable hookup and vac. lines.

If the newer one uses the electronic spedo and no vac. but the jeep does use them you won't have a spedo and your 4x4 light wont turn on. also if you are putting it in a vehichle with vac disco it won't slide the lock over.

I'm sure you knew that but just wanted to make sure.
