were the early to mid 90s chevy turbo diesel any good. has anyone ever owned one? i know the none turbo were slugs.

Old gm diesels

I have an 88' K30 w/ 6.2l no turbo...it's a slug on hills, but will get you there fine otherwise...straight piped & sounds like a dragster with your foot in it.

Have a Banks turbo to go on it, havent found time to install yet..I'm hoping that'l wake it up some...

The whole truck was a deal, so I didn't even count the motor when buyin it...but so far works decent.

My buddy has a 6.5 w/ turbo and it'll rock & roll on down the road. Aint scared a hills neither,

6.2 non turbo diesels... good motor but can't get out of their own way.. (in chevy trucks until '93 'i think') i have a '91 with 280K on it, DD'ing it about 60 miles per day.

6.5 turbo diesels... good motors, known problems with the injector pumps.. (in chevy trucks from '94 until the Dmax came out)

they've got cooling system issues also and will pop head gaskets/crack heads. there is a fix iirc though...

imo, not a bad setup if you get one at a deal. it'd have to be a hell of alot cheaper than a navistar/cummins.

diesel

thanks for the info. do you guys know of any for sale?

I used to haul cars for a man that had a '97 6.5l. I only towed with it on 2 trips. Towed fine all day long, sluggish on hills... but what are you gonna do? Truck pulled a 2 car wedge goose. He has since sold it for a PSD.

It shouldn't be hard to find one for around 4k. I picked mine up a little over a year ago and it has done well. Towed my rig to all the big east coast places without any problems. It is a 6.5 with turbo. Sluggish on the hills, and from a dead start but will tow 70mph all day long without heating up. Big hills will heat it up so I am getting ready for the intercooler upgrade.

12 valve cummins

would the older 12 valve cummins have much more power than my 99 gmc with the 6.0? or would the chevy 6.5 turbo be much better?

cummins hands down... no comparison to the 6.5.

i see

i had a guy just tell me that the older 12 valve cummins were not all that great.

to be blunt, whoever told you that is clueless.

Cummins hands down over the Detroit 6.2/6.5
Of couse I am a little biased based on who signs my paycheck.

Power is no comparison.
Potential is really no comparison.
And you mentioned WVO. The 12V cummins is handling it better than just about any motor out there as far as my research.

Id run WVO through a 24V before a 6.2;)

sweet

cool well thats what i am going to get then. i thought the cummins was the only way to go. i was surprized when this guy was talkin to me. sayin the 12 valve wasn't all that great.

The 12v is the way to go. Once I get back to making money instead of spending it one will replace my gmc 6.5. Sure there are other good diesels out there, but the 12v is tried and proven itself over many years. Plus it is fairly easy to get more power out of it. Downside is that a dodge rides like crap, looks about the same, and costs more.

I have said time and time again i love my 12v. Has a ton of power. Good thing about a 12v is mechanical pump, and hour in the driveway and you can have an extra 50 -100 horses with $0 spent. Just put a decent fuel plate, air filter and 4" exhaust and youll have a enough power to pull anything.

what he said

the 6.0 has a hard time pulling 7000lbs. it does ok on flat surfaces but when you go up most any hill its 35mph. or slower depending on the hill. plus the tranny starts to get hot. it hasn't over heated but close. it work great for a normal rock crawler, but 52s 2.5 tons slow it down. if any one is lookin for a clean 99 gmc 3/4 ton. i will make them a sweat deal.

Typical Chevy drivel...

Don't be a hater 'cause your Isuzu don't cut it! :flipoff2:

My '93 D350 rides great compared to the Ford it replaced... If I'd wanted "good ride" I'd have got an Escalade! *EVERYTHING* is a trade off. Rich said it best... "I wanted a CTD and whatever came wrapped around it"

I am a chevy driver strickly due to price and availability. My DD broke down and couldn't be fixed in time to be at work on monday. I had to get to work. There was a chevy turbo diesel for sale down the road for cheap. The dodge was more than 3 times the price. Like I said, when I have the cash it will be a CTD.
