After the 4x4Cross in May, I need to be prepared to tow my junk home - this is to Maryland, 8+hrs 500 miles.
Any suggestions on the most economical way to do this? I don't own a trailer or tow rig. 4Runner is perfectly streetable.
I'm thinking maybe drive it down, have reservations for a U-haul truck and trailer or dolly for the trip home?
I don't really need a big box truck, just something to pull it with. Or what are the chances of being able to rent an SUV from like Hertz that has a hitch?
With the distance, any rental with a per-mile fee will add up fast.

I would reccomend to take a truckload of parts with you and be prepared to spend two extra days. I think that would be cheaper. Other options would be to leave it there or look into Ryder. They rent by the day rather than by the mile, but no one way. Use their truck to bring it down and take it back. If you have to rent Uhaul they are negotiable on their rates. I've got a 20% discount before.

The last time my work truck was in the shop they (Enterprise) sent me home with an Expedition EL with a hitch that wasn't locked.

Here is what I would do. I would rent the smallest box truck they will let you have with a hitch and rent the tow dolly or trailer. Last time I rented it was like $20 more to get the trailer vs dolly. Anyway, It should be the smaller cube sized truck. 1 i rented had 6.0L engine low miles etc.. So with this setup, you would be safe for the trip there and back, PLUS have a place to camp out of the weather while your driving all over BFW while your down here.. Can't hurt to at least check on it..

Plan B. Get small trailer, load up with parts and hope for the best..

with the amount of people at the race that know what they are doing as far as fixing a 4runner I would say bring a ton of tools and parts and hope for the best. I guess the only thing you could really do that would be unrepairable or replaceable would be a blown engine.....

You should be able to rent a truck from enterprise. My baja sae team did that when we wern't allowed to tow with our van (which we were happy for) and our truck wasn't going to be delivered on time. We got a 05 or 06, new either way, F250 and loaded up our enclosed trailer and took it. Not sure what the agreement was but I cant imagine any other reason to rent an F250, not sure the price either. But can be done.
