I've always got mixed reviews of this, some say no, some say sure. This would be on a vehicle that sees the road as well as the trails. I've read that they need to be set up exactly the same as they were in the previous center but then also read that it doesn't matter. What's the general consensus here?

Think of it like this. If you had a pinion bearing go out, and you pull the axle apart to swap the pinion bearing... when you reinstall the gears you are installing a used set of gears.

the only difference is that the new to you set of used gears is of unknown quantity. So long as they aren't screwed up, there's no difference.

That's kind of what I figured. Just much cheaper to get used gears and it's nice to pinch a few pennies here and there.

Obviously you should make sure the gears don't have some kind of crazy wear pattern from the PO having them set up incorrectly...
