I am looking at trading a truck for one out of state and was wondering how to do the title transfer and tags and such.

It would be a drive halfway there and do the deal and drive halfway back kind of deal, so both would need to be driven. What do you do, mail tags back, swap tags (which is illegal and dont want to go that route) or what is done? Towing is not an option.

Thanks NC4x4!

From a dealer? Private individual?

If its a dealer, you should be able to get temp/transport tags from them if you have insurance set up beforehand. If its out of state, you'd have to keep insurance on your old tag and take it to the DMV and transfer it to the new vehicle that has temp tags on it. If its from an individual, there is really no way to do it out of state that I know of.

Get it insured first. You should be able to do that on a VIN# alone. Plan it so you can get tags as soon as you're home.

I bought a car from my friend in SC in '08 and just drove it home. Went to the plate office in the morning and got new tags. Done deal.

Run with no tags instead of false ones.

If you get pulled over and show the officer a BOS/title dated that day, and a proof of insurance, they'd be hard pressed to cite you with anything that would ever hold up.

Edit: This should be dead obvious but make sure your license is in good standing and you aren't doing/carrying anything illegal.

I get to do the right thing and say it before a mod does.
DONT DO ANYHTING ILLEGAL NC4X4 DOSENT APPROVE :fuck-you:

Anyway wait for dark and make a run for it :driver:

Ok now to be helpful!
If you cant have it towed or get tags and everything before hand i'd do as arch said. If you get pulled and they decide to right a ticket be nice and smile cause you are in the wrong. Then turn and get it droped. Unless your acting dumb you want be noticed, always helps to have someone follow you too!

Actually its legal in NC to swap your tag over to a same type car/truck for up to 15 days (assuming it has insurance on it) while you transfer the plates etc..

BUT
I personally would do the title swap BEFORE, give each other 2-3 weeks to complete that part and get your new titles back or at least registered sucessfully. THEN do the swap. THat way your not trying to clear up some BS paper work problem from a different state with someone who may suddenly care less about your situation..
