My Truck has been running hot lately. Its a 4dr 1995 Explorer XLT 4wd. When i turn on the AC the temp climbs pretty steady (after about 10-20 min of stop and go city traffic in 85+ degree weather, it will be approaching the redline = uh oh) . If i dont run AC (or if i just run the vent) the temp will climb steadily to a little above 1/2 - 3/4 (depending on outside temp or stop and go amounts) way then stay there. Stop and go traffic it heats up pretty quick obviously. Replaced the fan clutch, flushed the radiator, and the thermostat ...I just wanted to post up to see if anyone had any other ideas of what might be the demon in my cooling system. I just cant seem to keep the temperature down without dying in the heat from running no AC... Please help if you can

What else could it be? :(

look between the Rad and the AC condenser, how much trash, pine needles, leaves are trapped between ?

Look at the AC condenser, the front side and the rear are all the fins straight ? if there are a number of them folded over, it makes a huge differance when the AC is on. as the air flow will be restricted and the added heat from the AC just adds to the job the rad is trying to perform.

The Fan clutch, form A'zone or from Ford ? there is a quality differance.

Anything on the truck changed from last year or just before this started happening ?

Also, is this a 4.0 or 5.0 ?

that area is clean.

Fins appear to be straight.

Autozone fan clutch, but those have been run for the past few replacements and never been an issue. (?)

Just randomly began to happen earlier this summer.

Its the 4.0 OHV motor.

You been out playing in the mud?

Yo,
May be the water pump. I believe Ford had some random pump problems with the impeller loosening on the shaft. Does it run hot on the freeway? If not, then air flow across radiator is good. In the city, your fan has to emulate the air flow at highway speeds. So, I would junk the fan clutch and put on a flex fan. Lots cheaper and guaranteed results. At the same time, change the water pump if its getting old. That should do it given the other changes you have made. If not, the radiator has lots of internal scale making it hard to reject the heat and should be cleaned by a shop or replaced. Start cheap and work to expensive.

Whew....

I have not been out in the mud. I have heard about the water pump impellers messing up, so I will try that. I havent been on the freeway lately so I dont know about that, but driving nonstop on bigger city roads DOES help keep the temp down....but it will still ever so slowly get hotter and hotter.
