I did a search and found a few threads on painting wheels but I want to make sure I have it right before I start this afternoon, not that its a big deal...

A month ago, all I wanted was one set of tires on one set of wheels. Well, you guys know how it is. Ive eneded up with 2 sets of tires and 3 sets of wheels. Two sets of wheels are steel and chrome. Id like to paint one of these sets black. Everything Ive read says before painting the wheels need to be roughed up with some sand paper. Im guessing that goes for chrome wheels as well? I watched a special on truck U one morning when they were painting chrome wheels black but they didnt use any sand paper before they painted them and the chrome kind of showed through the black paint. If I just clean them, primer them, paint them, then go over with a clear coat will it stick for a while?

too my knowledge it wont stick good at all you will need to rough it up but chrome is super hard and wont rough up with out something super rough so there for you will see sand scratches if you do try it sand the surface really good with 320 grit clean with laquer thinner and apply some adhesion promoter then apply your paint may hold for a while but will surely still chip if any thing hits it good luck and let us know how it does:beer:

I bought some sand paper, self etching primer, automotive primer, black wheel paint and clear coat. Can I skip the regular primer and apply the paint directly to the self etching primer?

I put a wire brush on my grider and roughed it up with that. Then 2 coats of rustoleum semi gloss black.

I just spent an hour sanding the wheels with sand paper by hand. I don't have any acetone so I used a rag with some gas to clean them. I'm getting ready to apply the self etching primer. I'm trying to get this done tonight before it rains and the humidity goes up.

I just finished. It took me 4 hrs and 15 min and I have a feeling it was a waste. I sanded the wheels until the entire surface was scuffed. It still felt slick, though, and I used 220 grit. I applied 2 coats of self etching primer and then 2 coats of dupli color wheel paint. Before I applied the first coat of clear I noticed there were a few spots on the wheel that looked like metal shavings. The spots were very rough. I sanded them down before I applied the clear coats. After all the coats, I can still see chrome through the paint when the light hits it just right. They look great, though. I'm about to mount them.

I drove it about 10 miles to my parents' house. It appears that the black paint is coming off of the primer, but this is unlikely, right? Maybe its just brake dust. Also, the clear coat didnt give it the glossy finish I was hoping for. I guess I should have used gloss black instead of satin. I also hate the way the dupli color wheel paint comes out of the nozzel. When it just comes out in a stream its hard to coat the surface evenly. I wish I had used a paint that has the wide, even spray nozel.
