Has anyone ever had any luck or good results from painting wheels themselves? What's the best method, aside from a professional or a powdercoating shop being involved? I'm thinking of just spray bombing them coat by coat with a clear on top. If it works it works, if not I'll do something else with them. Color will be black. I figure I've got nothing to lose other than a set of wheels that no one else wants.

gonna paint the wheels that came on the dodge? i dont know if steel vs alloy matters

i guess youve seen how the hammered paint turned out on the mj wheels, i really think it looks good, but the only problem is adhesion, i wish i had roughed the surface a little bit, now it flakes off pretty easily every time something hits them

get them powdercoated

I painted my Jeep wheels myself. They used to be chrome but they were pretty rusted. i bought some rust killer at Advance. Its called "Right-Stuff". Its in the paint section. Wipe it on liberally. Then I used primer and the cheap gloss black spray paint from Walmart. Its like $2 per can and it seems to hold up better than other more expensive paints. Mine came out pretty good. Be sure to sand the rims pretty good to ruff up the surface.. I think you will be fairly pleased with the outcome.

i did the wheels on my old xj

cleaned very very well

two coats of primer, two coats of color

never had any issues i couldnt fix with a qtip and touch up paint

sandblast for a good clean surface then go to lowes & get the rattle can epoxy paint that is used on appliences do not use primer it says it on the can but you must have the surface prepared & clean wipe with acetone before painting

I personally wouldn't worry with powdercoating. If you rub/spin the wheel on a rock, the paint it coming off, so why pay big bucks for it.

Scuff it up w/ 220-400 sandpaper and let it sit in the sun to get warm/ Spray away and keep it in the sun to bake.

as others have said, just ruff it up real good... then spray em with the epoxy paint for appliances... its got a harder finish... then you can wet sand and add clear if u want more shine...

powdercoatin aint real cheap, and as matt said a rock will take it off too...

i think these may be for his tow rig, so i guess rocks arent too much of a concern

Adam is right on target. I'll give these a shot when I get the chance...seems like the next couple of days are going to be good for some outdoor wheel baking.

If it was for the tow rig, I might put more care into it. As for the jeep, wire brush and rattle can. Came out decent, you can't see the blemishis when they are muddy.

if you are dealing with bare metal or alloy i would consider some rattle can self etching primer that will make a huge difference. rought it up with 220, primer and let it dry, sand primer with 600, and paint away. without self etching primer it will start to flake. any auto body paint store should have self etching primer in a rattle can

I just finished painting my H1s a few minutes ago with a hammered base and a rust tough top layer. Turned out pretty nicely.

Baaaahh....spraypaint will never work! It's really not that difficult. Just point and shoot.

I did my buddy's steel wheels a while back with black rustoleum and they held up fine. A little work with a wire wheel and a few coats later he had black wheels.

I started them last night. Went over the wheels with a 120 grit, I think it was. Wiped them down, sprayed with a self-etching primer...then some auto acrylic enamel...semi-gloss black. They turned out decent for the minimal amount of work put in. I'm going to sand them down again and do a couple of coats on each and then maybe a layer of clear for protection. I've taken pictures of the process, will post later.
