So I was out and about the other day and stopped at a Pawn Shop to see what tools they had. I've been looking for a Compressor and figured I could probably find one there.

they had a few and at first I thought I was just way off on my pricing. they were all priced like new, yet were far from it. $200-$450 for small compressors. I figured maybe there was something about them that they were worth that much, even used.

I walked around to the power tools and saw the exact same model Milwaukee Sawzall that I just got a few weeks ago new from Lowes. Mine cost $120. they wanted $160 for their used one.

WTF? anyone else run into this? are they just waiting for people that don't know any better? or do they not research what they have?

yeah..pretend like you're in a third world country and haggle. I've gotted stff cheap in pawn shops but only after I acted interested and made offers.

Pawn shops actually pay about 20% of what you see on the tag. That air compressor with the $500 tag... they gave some poor F*&k or some crack head thief $100....

Offer 40 - 50 % of the price tag, they'll usually take it. Be aware that a lot of stolen items go through pawn shops.

Funny you say that, as it is pretty common knowledge.

When my tools were stolen 2 years ago ($3700 worth) I was checking the pawn shops, and the owners were just appaled that I would think to look there for my stolen goods.

" They make a huge effort to co-operate with the police to make sure the Pawn industry maintains a good name. "

The police were pretty much a joke in finding anything, they caught some shlep with a few cash drawers and called it good. fawk trying any harder, there is coffee to be drank and tickets to write.

Make sure you have cash in hand, never keep it all in your wallet or the same pocket. When you make an offer, make sure you have that much, or there about in your hand, not holding it out in front of them, but where it is visible, so they know you are dealing in cash. Drive a hard bargain, none of those guys ever want to see money walk out of their store. This also holds true for junk yards.
