pay the wife to build the rig?

So, I have been collecting parts for the TJ build for a year now. I’ve been patient, waiting on good deals to surface, and only got stuff when I could pay cash or if I had to order it, could pay off the credit card immediately (i.e., not going into debt or paying interest). Am getting very close to build time, probably start in the next few weeks.

The wife has never said anything bad about any of this money I’ve spent or asked for anything in return. Now she wants to go to Disney this fall, and it is serious. I’d rather wait another year until our daughter is 5, thinking she’d get more out of it. But I’m thinking that it is better to just say “yes dear” and take them to Disney this fall in order to avoid any possible "discussions". In fairness to my wife, remember, she has never said anything bad about the TJ parts collecting/build.

So, here’s my question: What have you had to “pay” your wife in order to build your rig?

well...first of all, any chance you can talk her out of disney? isnt there anything closer to a wheeling spot? there isnt a rock within 1500 miles of disney!

that and disney sucks. tourist trap/money hole. take em to carowinds and be done with it. The only time i had fun at disney was after i was 21 and could go to the bars at adventure landing or whatever it was called and that one street down town, orange street or something like that.

you know your wife better than any of us though. If your having to wonder if your going to pay....chances are....your going to have to pay.

be glad she isn't counting all the $$$ or saying anything about the build. Go to Disney and enjoy it and be glad she keeps quite about spending $$$ on a build.

Don't get me wrong, the wife and I had lots of fun at Disney before we were parents and I fully intend to take them this fall just like she wants.
It just got me thinking and I thought it would be an interesting thread, so I asked the question, what have you paid your wife to build your rig?

Id advise waiting until she is 5...just went in January and my daughter is 5 she is the 2nd tallest in her class and there were several kiddy rides she couldnt get on because of height and the ones she could she was borderline on.

YMMV

I'd have to agree with you on this. We took Josh @ 6 y/o... doesn't remember a flippin' thing about the trip! Granted, he was wide eyed the entire time & I vaguely recall having a few select "good times" during the week (pushing his wilted @$$ all over the place was NOT one of them). IMHO, all it did was set a precedence for spending $$$ on stuff with little/no benefit for both him & Mom...

My sincere recommendation is to let it ride another 2-3 years until she can remember some small detail of went down...

My daughter just got back from disney (8y/o) and didn't enjoy it because it was long lines and kids hate lines.

Compromise and get season tickets to carowinds, then you can go anytime for the entire summer. It willl also give you a chance to see how she enjoys the parks.

this is a good idea...contrary to belief, not every kid likes amusement parks! that would SUCK to blow the cash for DW and find out your kid hates amusement parks, lol.

good advice... you might try carowinds or kings dominion and test the waters on a small weekend trip.

Funny this topic, just had a similar conversation with my wife.. Something about what if she spent 10k per year on scrapbooking.. I'd laughed and said its not the money aspect but she'd need to pick a better hobby with something to actually show for it. I said if it weren't '10k on scrapbooks' I'd be fine... If it were 10k in gardening or house stuff. That'd be awesome as our house would look nice.. (this was all hypothetical talk as she needs to finish her last semester of college, but I think she's planning ahead..)

My wife knows stuff keeps showing up, axles...wheels...tires...etc. She doesn't (hasn't yet) asked where it came from, or what it costs.

Thank God.

Don't fuss, go to Disney. Have a good time. Most importantly, make the wife happy.

Ashley doesn't say alot about me building/working on my jeep but usually if I'm gone one weekend I have to spend the next weekend shopping or in Boone on a little outing which consists mainly of SHOPPING.

I say don't rock the boat,if she want's to go to DW take her,but do it as economically as possible. If you refuse to go the time will come in the near future that she will start to question where stuff came from and how much it cost. Then she will want to know when she can buy her something that cost that much.My wife has been around this long enuf that she has a pretty good ideal what stuff cost but never say's anything.
We don't have that problem here.We went to DW last summer for a week, already been to MB this year for a week and will be goin back for a week in Sept. Those were her's,mine are the Aprils fools ride at Harlan and the fall crawl. It doesnt work for everybody but it does for us. If you guy's think it's a tourist trap you need to go to Dollywood and IMO Carrowinds sucks donkey balls.

Unfortunitally I have to agree with him on this.We took Jake when he was four and again last summer when he was eight and he had a better time and remembers more from the second trip.

I'll have to second the Carowinds idea. Several years ago my kids and I all had season passes. Granted, this is not my kind of time spent, but, the kids loved it! My youngest was maybe 10 and the oldest 14. We usually went on weekdays, and far less time waiting. Take a picnic lunch and save a bundle. Some days, just go to the water park. Some days go and ride the rides. If you were going to DW for yourselves, I'd say go for it, but, the wee one won't remember a thing.

A funny story:

On the way back from Harlan a friend and I stopped at Arbys for a bite. I over heard a "mom" talking to her young son, I'd say he was four or so. He wasn't eating, but he was talking about the big truck(My Jeep). He was all excited about it. I went up to his table, and asked him if he liked my truck, he said yes with big wide open eyes. I then told him, if he would eat good, I would let him get up in it. I was looking at Mom, and Dad, and they were OK with it.
So, you guessed it, he devoured his meal, and fast! So, I kept my word and took him by his hand and we went out back where I was parked. I lifted him up into the Jeep and he was all smiles. Vroooming, and so on, was great! Mom took pictures as did the grand parents. When he was ready to get out, he was still jumping with excitement.
My point is what his mom said.
They had just returned from a two week trip to the beach and all it had to offer a family, and she said, out of all we did, this is what he will remember!

busch gardens in willamsburg va might be a better option for ya. much cheaper when i went due to the air force, navy, etc having a big presence in newport news, etc. and with the economy being in the crapper.... its about 7.5 hours from here in a lifted xj on 37s so in something normal its probably a little quicker lol.

there is a ton of hotels including a great wolf lodge like what they just opened in concord. theme rooms, waterpark inside, etc. plus just can do the park for a day and there is the beach. plus they do a bush garden and water country pass thing if no one wanted to do the beach. this is from their site:

if you know someone that's active military you can get some sweet discounts on tix as well.

now if your talking disney. there is only one to me. grand lakes/disney oklahoma. its just one huge ass rock garden. good luck with your decision.

If she wants to go to Disney, go. Do it for her. Don't worry about how much it costs or whether you're going to have a good time or not. Do it for her, make sure that every minute of every hour of every day of the vacation is to make your wife and kid happy. Make it the vacation they will remember and talk about all their lives. If mom's happy, everyones happy. If mom's not happy, well you know. If you do this you won't ever have to worry about toys, prices, wheelin trips or gettin some lovin. In my home, for 14 years, what's mine is hers and what's hers is hers. I have never lacked for a single thing. Ok, maybe a few lost hours of sleep, but nothing important.

You are right, and we ARE going to Disney this fall, I'm looking forward to it. We haven't decided the exact dates yet, but will be Oct. or Nov. so if anyone else here is going then, let me know. We actually went several years ago at halloween before we had our daughter and that was the perfect time to go. I think Space Mountain was the only place we waited in line for more than 15 minutes.
