I moved to NC from Tennessee in 1994 and can not recall ever being sent a form for PPT? In the meantime, I've accumulated probably 10+ complete trucks (in different stages of repair) that are not registered. According to this form I was sent, I will be taxed on my collection? AND my dogs? I recently moved from Wake County (South of Raleigh) up to Durham being probably the only reason I got one this time?
I damn sure don't feel like paying $60 per dog (as mentioned on the web site) and God only knows how much for every vehicle I got resting on blocks that wasn't specified on the site? I somehow slipped between the cracks for the past 14 years in Wake County. I just wonder the consequences for playing dumb that I felt I only needed to report running vehicles? And I am only keeping my brother's dogs?
I still have property in Tennessee and still own my Wake County house and I just got through moving most of my collection to Durham. I don't want to have to hide them by moving them again? Born free and TAXED TO DEATH!!!
Anybody know the system enough to give me some insight? This is all new to me.:shaking: And time is tickin for me to either fess up or lie... Do I need to invest in a good privacy fence to hide my collection? What up?

Here is the form converted to JPG.

Property tax on a dog? WTF.

As long as there are no big fines for not paying/reporting, I'd play dumb. Guilford Co. sends a form every year listing all kinds of property, I never fill it out, and it has no line for dogs.

just remember, ignorance of the law is not a defense

If they are not registered, no way to track for tax purposes

I never heard of a dog tax, never paid one since I've owned dogs (1997). I thought I've been 100% legal with them, but never paid any taxes or even pet license fees. This has been both within and outside the city limits of Greensboro, but always in Guilford county.

About the unregistered vehicles...guilford county sends a card out every year where you declare your unregistered vehicles and other undocumented property (boats trailers, outbuildings, house additions, fences...). I put my unregistered CJ on there a few years back, and nothing ever became of it. The card on the following year didnt show it, I can't remember if I wrote it in again, but they sure as hell got me when I re-registered it. I just returned my card for 2008, I added a the VIN of another parts CJ I have, hopefully the taxman does nothing again.

I looked up Guilford County and there's no mention of any Personnal Property Forms. Ya'll are off the hook unless you own a Business.
I gave thought to razor wire and privacy fencing with only registering one dog just for my "Beware of dog" sign? How they gonna know without flying a helicopter into my compound?
I looked it up and dogs cost $75 if they aren't spayed or neutered. $10 if fixed (with proof). It says every vehicle has a different worth and will be determined by the tax appraiser.
Half my vehicles aren't registered yet and even a couple are registered in Tennessee. And a few registered in my name have been parted out to near nothing. Tennessee has a much higher sales tax when you register a vehicle but it's worth it if that gets me around taxes. I can always move them back to Willow Spring but I didn't want to. That's an hour drive to play with my toys and I've seen how renter kids treat cars parked in their back yards. I have a good renter right now but they are not guaranteed.
Or I can bite this bullet and describe how every vehicle has issues with my fingers crossed that I don't get raped. Or I can jerk every axle out that I'm working on and place every truck on blocks.
Or I can just call anonomously and be up front with the tax appraiser on my situation and options?

Yeah they just started "requiring" you to pay your taxes on pets.
In years past it was more of a claim the pet pay the tax, dont claim the pet dont pay the tax.
Anyways, what part of N. Durham do you live in?

I have never paid a "pet" tax here in Guilford county, but my parents live in Forsyth county and they have to pay a tax on each dog (higher if the dog is not spayed or neutered). In themail last week I did receive a form from Guilford county asking me to list all of my personal property (boat, tractor, etc.) that was not already licensed with the state (all of my cars are already registered with the DMV). I do not agree with the tax on personal property (someone already paid sales tax when it was new); however, I do agree with pet taxes, and I would pay them if they were required in Guilford county. Pet taxes help with the animal shelters, and frankly unless you are breeding your dogs, it helps with people getting their animals fixed which will help with the stray population. Just my $0.02.

Guilford DOES have the personal property tax for individuals, essentially if you have a "non tagged" item such as a tractor they want you to pay taxes on it.

I got mine the other day for my house plus a couple more for my property (1 for each "lot")

I have not read thru it to see if my canoe counts / and I DID pay/register it with NC wildlife so that may count (just like cars are paid with NCDMV)

taxes

I have lived in multiple states. Each one was different in what it "went after" to generate tax revenue. Income, investments, personal property, services, road tax, schools, bonds, pet license fees, etc. Each one has figured out how they are going to generate sufficient revenue to manage their level of services to the degree the population has become accustom to. Some times you have a personal situation that allows you to have a low overall tax rate, others it is high. Just depends on where you are and what your personal situation is. Just know they will get their money one way or another. Remember the only two guarantees are death and taxes.

Hamlin Road just off of Red Mill. The dead end side of Hamlin. Property backs up to Falls Lake. Out of the city and sewer / water / garbage pickup are not available. But all of them are a stones throw away on Red Mill at the Middle School.

I'm figuring out the best approach to contacting the tax accessor. There's only a single number for the tax administration office that takes care of all of it.

#2 is a good start, no harm there, just ask.

But #1 is what you'll end up doing to be legal.

The process is actually quite simple - they'll provide a value based on teh vehicle and year. It will be some BS number pulled from a magic hat.
You have 30 days to provide proof otherwise - take a few pictures and provide a nexplaination of the current state. up on blocks w/o motor or whatever. In an ideal world you will provide an estimate of value from a "reputable source" (read - a buddy who wons a shop or osmething). They then re-evaluate the vehicle.
I went through this 3 times w/ Forsyth Co, every time in the end the re-evaluated value was pretty fair (unlike their original).
The shitty thing is that, depending on your municipality, tehre may be a flat tax/fee for local fire department or police etc (e.g. just $20) so you'll get hit w/ that for every vehicle.

unfortunately since this is "property tax" and not "road use tax" teh fact that they are not driven on NC roads is irrelevant.

Oh and re: pet tax - FORSYTH COUNTY HAS A TAX FOR *CATS* AS WELL.
Who the hell even WANTS a cat in the first place? they just kind of happen...
We never figured out how they learned we had one - figure the Vet must sold us out...

Call is in and everyone that was there right now (1:45) is stumped. She's going to call me back when certain Superintendants get back from lunch to ask. I bet they take 2 hour lunches on our dime?
I basically told her I collect and restore old trucks and had several vehicles, some for parts, some that are only half a car and such and that most were 35 years old. I asked where the line was drawn. I may be venturing into uncharted territory? The line could just now be drawn?
She also said that they are only collecting data for the database for the pets. I mentioned that my dog was 14 y.o. and that digging up proof she's been fixed would be impossible. She said since it is the first year, that they are going with the honor system right now. I don't think they will argue or try to look under my Chow dog if I list her as being fixed unless they don't value their fingers?:flipoff2:

LOL

"Don't believe me? Have a look for yourself."

And the verdict is in! Loren with Durham Co. Tax Office said she got many different answer but one seemed to fit the bill. If the vehicle is drivable or if it will be drivable in the coming year, it needs reported. Sounds like I only need to pull a couple of tires instead of axles.:huggy:

wouldnt it be easier to disconnect the battery...that would make it "not driveable".

Until your neighbors complain, and you realize that near the city, or in county limits you are not zoned to have non drivable vehicles at you residence. :(

My inlaws got a letter and tax form for their beach house in brunswick co.... they rent it out...so I guess thats where it comes in...they just got a letter saying they have to inventory the contents of the whole house for property tax. The instructions/starter form go as far as plates, utensils, coffemaker, can opener, linens, etc, etc.

We'll all be there sooner or later. :(

I have paid dog tax for 8 years. if the dog is nutrard then the tax is cheaper.

And on the property tax I have paid for 5 years. it never gets easier

Dog tax that is insane, and taxes on house hold items. I guess they will be taxing us soon on our body parts soon too.
