I'm trying to get a pitman arm off my brother's Dodge and haven't been successful thus far. I just put a cheap pitman arm puller on it and broke it, then quit.

Anybody have any tips for getting one off a truck that's been covered in rust and mud for years?

Get a big pickle fork set for an hammer if you have one. Thats how the tire shop got mine off after I broke a couple of the nice pullers. If you dont have an air hammer Id just take it to a tire shop.

$14 PA puller at AutoZoo... 1 year warranty (so if it breaks, take it back)

1) Spray the pitman & shaft w/ PB daily starting about 5 days out
2) Grease the threads of the puller
3) Tighten the puller by hand to insure it's straight
4) Sock it down tight with an impact (don't wail on it for 5 minutes either!)
5) Tap the splined section of the PA and the hex end of the puller
6) Hit it with the impact again

If it doesn't pop off then, leave it alone for the night! Hit in the AM with more PB & again before you start... then 4-6 until it pops off. Just be careful, because some will pop off VERY violently (sounds like a shotgun! )

PB blaster, pickle fork and bfh. If using a puller, get it real tight and beat on the pitman arm itself with a hammer...do the same if using a pickle fork. Heat helps too.
