We've got a couple of plumbers here, and plenty of other folks that have snaked a drain once or twice, so hopefully you guys can offer some ideas.

I've got a cast iron 4" waste line running under the house. It's the bell and sleeve stuff that's soldered together. It's 60 or 70 years old. I need to join a new 2" PVC line to it.

Basically, I've got two choices -- section the iron pipe and insert a 4" PVC tee inline with some rubber joints.

Or, I could run another 10-15ft of 2" pipe back to the cleanout at the end of the iron pipe. Unscrew the cleanout, screw on a 4" PVC adapter, and put the 4" tee there with a new cleanout.

I can get some pictures if it would help. At the moment, I'm leaning toward sectioning the old pipe. Not sure I can unscrew the old cleanout without breaking something, and it'll be cleaner and faster the other way.

Thoughts one way or the other?

I would cut the iron pipe with a chain cutter then Fernco or rubber sleeve connect the PVC "T". Those old hemp and solder joints are very weak by now and don't like being disturbed.

My $0.02

X2 & try NOT to shift the pipe when you work on it or you could have a nightmare.

or call a pro if you can...

Thanks guys. Just a few minutes ago, I had the great fawking pleasure of crawling under the house to clear a clog. So I got some photos while I was there.

Here's where I'll insert a wye with the new 2" line. The wye in the background is 1-1/2" and is cobbled together beyond belief. It will all be abandoned when the new stuff goes in.

And here are two shots of the cleanout at the other end of the house.
