Poison Spyder Customs TJ cage- Is it worth it?

4wd.com currently has it for just over 1k including taxes with free shipping.

With it being pretty much idiot proof as far as laser notched and etched where each tube is supposed to go is really nice. So is not having to go through the dash, since my AC still works great, and being compatible with the factory soft top and doors is huge considering my jeep stays outside and I dont want the weather to destroy the interior.

I probably would modify the cage to better fit my jeep:
Horizontal bars going from B to C pillars
Harness bar
Bars going across the back at the bottom of the C pillars.
Tie it into my rear shock mounts
Add plates to tie it into the frame.

Is it worth it for mild/hardcore rock crawling? I want to be safe and not worry about it being completely trashed after a decent rollover. Is it also worth it since i would be modifying it vs having a shop build it from scratch?

You can get a custom cage made by somebody welded and all for about that price. I paid 700 5 years ago for my TJ cage with just dropping my TJ off and having somebody do it for me.

Going through the dash will also make for a stronger cage.

Honestly it looks pretty well designed and thought out. I'm not convinced that going through the dash with a single tube would make a stronger cage. The angle pieces that bolt into the factory cowl will be extremely strong when combined with the factory panels. And a 4-5ft tube is much more likely to buckle than a sub-2ft tube. That portion of the body is pretty structural, as it has to hold the door and windshield and ties into the steering column and dash support.

With that said, either style should be more than sufficient for low speed rollovers, and neither are designed for you to walk away after rolling 6 times at 100mph. So I'd base my decision on whether I wanted something custom or bolt on, and whether I could give up the vehicle for a few weeks while I was getting a custom cage done.

Another option I stumbled upon. Haven’t heard a lot about them but hey it’s worth a look. I noticed their XJ cage on a KOH XJ on pirate.

It looks like 1.75 tube. Most likely HREW tubing. You could probably request DOM for an upgraded price. I’ve seen other companies offer the choice before.

HREW tubing is fine for the recreational cages. Use DOM if you have the cash. Some race leagues might require chromoly?

I've had the dash out of each Jeep at least twice. No way I'd install a cage that had to be removed in order to get the dash out.

Also, looks like the headroom for rear seat passengers might be iffy.

Hi! Thanks for the link Keith

Happy to answer any questions about our stuff or just cages in general

I see a lot of people thinking that with a cage “the rig won’t be totally trashed after a decent rollover”. This is not the mindset you ever want. Your rig will be trashed, the cage is to save your life not the rig.

Through the dash is definitely stronger but either way should be tied into the frame for best strength and safety.

With the current price of materials I wouldn’t want a $700 cage trying to save my life now days.

I can’t speak for the TJ cage, but I just welded up one of those Poison Spyder cages for my CJ. It is a nice kit that goes together really well. There is a crap ton of welding to do, and it takes a little magic or friends that remember where you live when you are assembling it to get it all tacked in place. It was amazing how well it all fit together.

That amount of tube, notches, and engineering seem very worth the price to me.
Unless you build several a year and have a formula for repeatablity I dont see a custom builder keeping up.
20 or so pieces of exactly fitting tube
30 or so notches or exact fitting ends
22 bends
And a smattering of hardware and specific brackets....two of which are custom laser cut and formed.....that's a bargain.

I’m finishing up building my own. It was my first one and there is a bit of a learning curve. Agreed that is a great price considering how much time I have in mine.
