Wondering what you guys thought was the best bang for your buck on a workshop. My area (because of neighbors) will require permits either way I go.
1. Pole-barn type construction, truss roof, sheet metal siding and roof.
2. All metal structure based on "carport type construction," can't afford a big prefab shop.
Either will eventually include a lift, insulation, interior wall covering. Desire two walk doors and 2 10x12 doors min.. I'm shooting for 2 bay plus a work area, basically 3 bays.
I've been told after a certain size all metal becomes affordable as oppossed to the other. I'm also way behind on construction techniques so alot will have to be contracted out or done extremely slow by me, honestly having it done quicker would alow me to make cash to offset having it constructed.
Any thoughts, suggestions or experience with good contractors? Thanks!

It's hard to say. I haven't priced a metal building lately but that used to be the way to go. Either way you go I would be glad to help you how ever I can. I'm a licensed Contractor so the permits wouldn't be to big of a problem. I also have a tractor and skid steer to do the grading. PM me and we can talk.

If you know what you're doing, a pole building will come out a lot nicer and stronger than the metal type building you're talking about. Put insulation and a wall inside and you won't even know it's a "pole barn".

:edit: But you know you just want to bite the bullet and call up one of the prefab metal shop companies and have them come build you something nice that will last decades.

I had a 400sqft pole barn built in 4 weeks with mostly weekends. It holds the toys gives us a place to get away from the wives sometimes. I vote pole barn. It cost around 1500 with many cases of beer for the labor.

The carport type buildings were something I considered until I went to dealer that had some different ones assembled . The price is fair , but they are pretty shaky .

not sure if you saw mine.. that I am building..

but it is a carport type design.. and to my surprise it is very sturdy.. I have walked on the roof probably 10 times with no movement or sway at all.

not sure on pricing.. but I have heard that the steel/carport style ones are pricy right now.. I actually bought mine off criagslist(of course I had to go take it down).

I think there are benefits to both.. easy of assembly, cost, sizes, etc.. I would suggest to go check out people that have the types you are looking at.. to make a decision..

Here is mine.

i have the prefabed style that you put together...(like a big arch)...i hate it...would rather have built it from block. you loose alot of space in the turns on the side.

I'm not a fan of the arch style either, easy to erect then hard the fit the remainer of the electrical ect. My biggest problem is lack knowledge on code requirements and equipment for grading, digging, and lifting materials. Plus I tend to get carried away and over build. I'll get intouch with you lockedup5 and anyone else who has advice thanks. Justin I'd love to avoid prmits and "the man" but certain neighbors aren't going to let that happen.

Whatever you do, be sure to check with local manicipality planning on all requirements for both. One might be less stringent in long run to save? If time wasn't a concern, I'd say build own pole barn with lots of beer and help. If time is factor, turn key metal with highly qualified contractor.
I take down barns whenever they come available for free and have been stockpiling for a pole barn on my TN land. Crisso telephone poles can be gotten for free if you know anyone who works for power company to set you up on some laying around one of their jobs. I plan on wrapping my crisso poles with HD clear plastic wrap and boxing them in so you can't smell, see or touch. Just some thoughts from a serious tight wad!

If anyone has gone through this in lexington, i would like a quick rundown of what you had to go through. I was hoping to tear down a couple sheds and build a pole barn where they used to be. The problem is that they are right on the property line. I wonder if i could "renovate" them. I will probably just be building a 3 sided structure to park my jeep, the lawn mower and maybe another stack or two of overflow firewood from my other sheds.
