pop starting a diesel

Any tricks to pop starting a Ram SRW 2500/12V Cummins 5.9L/NV4500 pickup? I'm just wondering if the high compression diesel might throw me some curve balls. Granny low, or would I need to get going faster and try 2nd gear?
Looking to pop start my towrig to get it home, then I can tear into the starter, maybe change some brushes and a smoked cable or two :kaioken:
 
Did it in mine a few times when I first bought it had dead batteries from sitting, was easy.

Pretty sure i did it in reverse once too.
 
Pop starting? Never heard it called that, I assume you are talking about rolling it down a hill and dropping the clutch to start it?

I've started our 12v 5spd like that in 2nd. Didn't try low, 1st drug the tires.

Unless he's replaced the CAD actuator with a posi-lok, 4wd won't engage without the engine running to supply vacuum ;)
 
2nd or 3rd would be what I'd try. Just to spin it easier. Oh and wait till it's above freezing for a while too

oh yeah!

I once rolled off a diesel rabbit in 1st gear, after downshifting from 3rd to 2nd and then to first rolling down a big hill... it worked :D :lol:
 
hooked to drkelly's Ram, popped the clutch after 30ft in 2nd gear, dragged the rear tires for about 10ft, fired right up. Thanks for the comments :huggy:

Diesels don't have vacuum, manifold is pressurized by the turbo.

But Dodge Cummins diesels DO have a vacuum pump that's driven off the back of the power steering pump and doesn't work unless the engine is running.. C'mon Terry, gimme a LITTLE credit. :flipoff2:
