I just bought a 72 INT. SCOUT and it just had new universals and custom(MY ASX) driveshafts.I finally fixed the downshift mechanism today and decided to take it for a drive. The downshift worked great and I was really excited but the rear axle fell out.Real custom job HUH?The rear axle looks like twisted caramel...and the spindel gear for lack of better term fell out of the tail. What am I lookin at as far as cost(driveshaft...)I think the custom axle was made of clay...
Thanks,Daniel

HUH????? You mean the rear driveshaft twisted like a pretzel and fell out???? Never saw a spindle gear.

I think some of your problem is going to be in the description of your problem. Is this a drive shaft issue or an axle issue?

You bought a cornbinder, that's yer problem!

For reference, I labeled a picture (though it's a front axle). Which part is broken?

sounds like he has some extreme axle wrap going on.

Did it happen in reverse?

i think what he is trying to say is that the drive shafts twisted and the slip yoke came out.

are the center pins on the leaf springs in good shape? the axle hasnt begun to dog leg, or become cock eyed has it? are the leafs themselves in good shape?

More info on this drive shaft might help too. who made it?

and.....uh...this may be a retarded question......but what is a downshift mechanism?

It's like a murder mystery.

I'm going with Capt Peacock in the Library with a Candlestick. What did I win?

Ok, we've had our fun, now lets try to actually help

You guys are so mean, funny but mean.

Well I just spilled my coffee from laughing at the responses.I'm gonna get some pics up here in a little while.Oh,ASX =ASS,Downshift=kick down linkage,I'll get a pick of spindel gear,Ha.

Yeah that'll buff out.

Basically, I agree with what they said above.
new shaft (duh)
check/fix pinion angle
figure out if you've got some axle wrap that needs attention...

The spindel gear you refer to, could you mean the male side of the slip yoke?

Good looking scout, not so good looking driveshaft, haha. Im a little far away, but I can make you a new shaft that will hold up better than that. Judging by how tight the twist is on the metal, that looks like about 1/16" thick wall tube (should be at least twice that thick in my opinion). As everyone has said, make sure that there isn't anything else causing the problem, put a new driveshaft in, and you should be good to go.

1)Pinion angle is still the way it was before this problem.I thought it looked kinda extreme myself but it seems to be the best angle to line up the universals.
2)Yes I was talking about the male side of slip yoke when I said spindel gear(still learning)
3)What is axle wrap?
4)Thanks for the compliment on the scout.I took off the shaft and took it to Fleetpride in hickory. They said it was about as thin as they had seen. Thanks for the offer of making another shaft...I may take you up on that when money is not so scarce.

Lessons learned;Don't punch the pedal on pavement from a dead start.Ha!
Don't refer to parts on a vehicle with made up words...
Thanks again for the help and for posting the pic.

axle wrap is when you punch on the gas and the whole axle rotates instead of the tires.

Unless the front of your driveshaft is unhooked, that angle is way wrong and even the slightest axle wrap would cause the joints to bind and result in the pretzel like appearance of the drive shaft.

if you are infact experiancing axle wrap, ladder bars (traction bars) helper springs (beef springs) or new springs all together should help.
