Its outside and freezing rain is coming down or I would post it right now. If nobody has posted I will get a pic up tomorrow for ya.

can some one send me the steps to putting on power steering in my 78 cj5. I am soon going to have the parts. Pics would be a big help too. I am going to try doing this myself.

You will have to remove the manual steering box first. I think the manual box uses 3 sheet metal brackets to mount the box to the frame, and you only need 2 of them for PS, could be vice versa, its been a while since I converted mine. I would highly recommend trashing the flimsy factory brackets and upgrading to an aftermarket bracket. I have the BigDaddy's bracket, it is worth the $100 or so, not sure if BD is still maknig them. MORE and i think Sam's Offroad make one too.

Most likely you will need a new steering shaft when converting, or at least a coupler. The coupler to the steering box is different if you are using a CJ-7 PS box. There may be a J-truck PS box that works with CJ manual steering shaft.

When putting the pump on the engine, you might have to get rid of the smog pump. Then the belt drive will need to be addressed, either a second belt, or one longer belt. I'm not sure how the V8 Ps box gets driven. I think my I6 uses a second belt. Make sure you have the extra drive pulley on your existing engine, or you'll have to add it.

Then you'll need 2 hoses, a pressure hose and return hose. The pressure hose can be tricky depending on what fitting ports are on you pump and box. Booty-fabbing a return hose is no problem, cut the tubes on the box and pump, then hose clamp some rubber hose between.

If you already have the parts I will look at them on friday if you will be able to meet around 3:30.

does the pressure hose connect the pump and the box? Where does the return hose go to? Does someone have pics of where the belt goes? Sorry for the questions new at this.

I'll bring you a power steering schematic from a manual If I can find one.

pressure hose goes from pump to box, return hose goes back from box to pump, its a complete loop.

I have looked at pic on many different forums but can find one that shows me how to bolt the pump bracket to the motor. Can some one please help with some pics. 304 motor by the way

all the parts are used they came off various cj's. ive got around $200 in all parts.ill take that for it.

The PS pump bracket is in two pieces, a front and a rear. The rear bracket mounts with three bolts to the end of the driver's side cylinder head. The pump sits inside this bracket, and the front bracket goes across the lower front of the pump. The front bracket mounts to a stud that sticks out of the driver's side of the water pump, 3/8 fine thread. All of the manual steering V8's that I have seen have this stud in place. The front bracket has two more bolts that attach to the rear bracket. There is also a pivot stud on the lower front of the pump that fits through a hole on the front bracket. The pivot stud can be a pain to remove and replace with the pump pulley in place, but it can be done. When it is all said and done, the pump sits just in front of and a little above the driver's side valve cover.
