Quick question

Went and looked at a 2001 24v Cummins 2500, ext cab, 4wd, shortbed, auto, 190k. Runs great and handles really well doesn't seem to have any tranny issues. Only problems is the dash will literally die and the gauges stop working and all the check engine lights come on.

So... my question is what would you offer on this truck? Its clean, and very nice, with only dash problems, and an auto.

I think we can get a smoking deal just wondering what yall think!

I'm not going to try and price it, its one of those things thats hard to call!
I will say that it's eaither a cam sensor , crank sensor or BCM...Most Likely a Cam sensor!

If the entire gauge cluster dies and truck runs fine while this happens...Im betting the ground strap behind the passenger side dash has worked loose. Fairly common, and cheap to fix. 1 royal pain in the ass to get to.

price would be damn near impossible to give without some additional info.
For one some 53s showed up in 01s (they did, I promise lets not argue here...) is this truck one?
How do the front end steering components look?
What shape is the exterior and interior in etc.

I could see a reasonable value anywhere between $7,000 and $16,000-$18,000

what do you mean by 53s? leaf springs?

front end looked fine, nothing seem worn out, interior is damn near perfect, exterior only only had minor paint chipping, underside and engine bay is very clean

53's were still showing up in 02!!! Mopar denys it but i've seen quite a few!

Skyhi, Your probably right about the ground but it the tach goes crazy and a CE light comes on its more than likely a cam sensor, thats what I find the normal complaint it!!

Like i said though, I've changed 6 BCM in the past few months!

Anyone with a fuel pressure gauge set can get you a pressure. It does have a test port for ease of testing on the inlet port of the VP-44!
The VP-44 is your injection pump located (looking from the front of the motor) on the right side, right behind the timing cover.

In all honesty , There no real way to determine if the pumps in bad shape unless you have a Code related to fuel injection!

It may not even throw a code and die on you!

I would start with reading the codes on the truck

Based on your last few comments, the BEST ADVICE I can give you is to get the truck to a local respected vendor who does Diesel work regularly.

Offer him $100-$200. To spend a couple hours checking it out and give an opinion. It could save you tons. That is never a bad idea on a used vehicle, but on a diesel, if you dont know a good deal about them, you could make a catastrophic error. Buy a bad gas engine you lose 1500, but a bad diesel and you are out 8-10k...

Hell the VP44 itself would set you back a grand with labor

Damb....What Am I doing wrong?

I've never charged a Diagnoses charge more than $40.00 !

Times are changing, I think I'm going to have to start charging for estimates where I have to put a vehicle on the lift!

Sorry for off topic!

Dude, I was trying to not undercut your $...I err on the high side and let people be pleasantly surprised...

Still $200 to keep ya from a bad deal would be worth it.

lol, I didnt take it that way, I was just sayin!

But you figure it takes me 3 hours to check everything on a truck and weed out the simple stuff... Thats about right on price!:bounce:
