My sister has a 1998 Ford Windstar. The dealer just changed the power steering box. She just told me "The power steering is messing up again now. It catches when I'm turning to the left."

She's in Rock Hill and I am in Concord, so I haven't seen it. Anybody have any ideas on what I can tell her other than to only turn right and go kick the dealer?

take it back to the dealer & this time have a meeting with the manager of the service dept

Sounds like one of a couple of things. Either the worm gear or sectorshaft is binding, or the box is loose. Either way, take it back to the stealership

Make sure there is no air in the system, Fords are pretty bad for this after a power steering repair. Lift the front tires off the ground, remove the power steering cap, and with the engine off turn the wheel in each direction 15 times. That should make sure it is not airlocked. If the dealer won't help her, give us a call, we are not far from Rock Hill and can take a look at it.

My good friend Derek Zoolander once explained it to me. Some people just aren't ambiturners.

Sounds like a crappy dealer too.

She will be taking it back to the stealership. I just wanted to see what you guys thought so that she would know what to tell them. That wasn't the only problem they didn't fix. her battery light was on, they replaced the battery, and the battery light still flashes sometimes like it did before.

By no means am I defending the stealership, but my parents have bought at least 4 vehicles from them and always taken them to this dealer for service or repair, and this is the first time they have not fixed the problem (my Dad took my sister's van in for her). Personally, I have learned my lesson already.

First off, that vehicle has a steering rack, not a box.

Did they replace the rack ? or replace the power steering pump ? ( both are notorious for failing )

If it was the pump, and it catches when turning, it could well still have air in it, but the steering rack could also be bad.

A talk with the service manager is probably in order, especially if the problems it was brought in for originally were not addressed.

Well, not sure but if you are talking about Clinton family Ford in RH, Claude Lawson was the Service Manager there for 19 years and left about 8-9 months ago. That may explain the difference in service quality.

Tell her to sell it and get a real minivan, Odyssey, Sienna etc.:flipoff2:

It is not Clinton Family Ford. I know she took it back to the the Ford Dealer in Hickory, but haven't heard if she has it back yet or not. I should probably call her tomorrow and see what's going on. I've thought she needed to sell the POS for a long time now!
