My first NEWB question...

Im a 4x4 automatic transmission newbe and while ive figured out how to put it in drive etc... Im not sure what is the best sequence to shift the t-case into low range.

Seems if i hit N on the t-case and the tranny is in a gear it starts free wheeling. Then i have to jam the t-case into gear.

Ideas?

I always put the transmission into neutral then shift the t-case...(YJ with TF999 and NP231). Don't know what to tell you if you are twin sticked and trying to shift "on the fly".

Put the tranny into neutral while rolling and she will shift into low range ok. If you shift the tcase into neutral while in gear they will become unsyncronized.

TH400/D20 twinstick here....normally just put it in Park and shift the TC, but *sometimes* have to drop it into Reverse for the TC go fully into Low (or back to High). Was riding with a bud (T18/D20 single lever) as he did the "shift on the fly" deal ... engaging the frontend going down Upper2

My CTD says to shift it one one fluid motion from 4hi to 4low with the trans in neutral, while travelling at 5mph or below, with one window 1/2 way down and your head cocked to the side... OK, maybe not the last 2..

Also, I've paused in neutral on the t-case and had it grind trying to go into high or low range. Had to shut off the engine, as the tranny started freewheeling, and wouldn't go into park either.

Ya can't do the in gear switch-a-roonie thing like with a 5-speed..

It sounds like your muffler bearings are bad...

my d300 does that and annoys the piss outta me. sometimes it will allow me to shift while the trans is in gear, sometimes it wont. The buggy is easy peasy to shutdown and start back up so thats my failsafe.

I was also thinking if you have that zgate crap that might make it harder to shift your tcase. I suggest if you have the cash to get a Novak conversion. It is very nice and I am reminded how much so when ever I shift.

well as much as i like other peoples products, they dont usually meet my needs. So I saved the $100+ and made my own shifter, kinda needed custom to clear the rest of my setup without butchering the tub... Got about $20+ plus my time into em...

Dude, he's got a D300...

Yeah, I was not sure if he was talking about the one in his signature or if he had another project.

Turbo 350 and NP205, I out the tranny in N and then shift the case.
