PSD 6.0 Starting issues???

I have a late 2004 6.0 PSD F-350 that has about 110K miles on it and have had very good performance out of it. The only trouble that i have had was the EGR Valve had to be replaced but that is it! Now I am having a hard time getting it started in the mornings. I know that cold temps are partially to blame but I should not have an issue in 40 to 50 degree F temps. If I plug the truck in it starts fine but this is the first time that I have had to plug this truck in since I've owned it and I bought it new? I had a 99 7.3 F-350 before this truck and I only had to plug that truck in one time in 5 yrs. and that was because those temps were single digits for only a few days? Just wondering if anyone may have any ideas of where to start looking???

Without more testing it hard to say it could be many things. The most common being a bad ICP sensor, Bad injector(s), or a failing HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump). 2003-mid 2004s have HPOPs that wear out around 100K from what ive read (I replaced mine at 120K due to starting problems).

You should check out www.thedieselgarage.com (a diesel site for all make and models), or www.thedieselstop.com (a powerstroke site) for more info and help. I got lots of help from both sites with the issues I've had with mine.

do 6.0's not have a Glow Plug relay like 7.3ls, my 7.3l had similar problems and that fixed it. looking to get a 6.0 but not sure yet, dont have much knowledge of them:confused:

Yea the 6.0s have a glow plug relay like the newer 7.3s but 99% of all starting problems on a 6.0 go back to injector/high pressure oil system problems

the fact that plugging it up will fix the problem tells me it would be glow plug related. had a 7.3 that did the same thing and was the relay.but like i said that was a 7.3, just seems to me that cold start problems would be basically the same on any of them.

x2 just get a dodge and you wont have to worry lol

Plugging it in heats the coolant in the block which heats the oil in the oil cooler which gets fed to the hpop (thats where it pull oil from). Id put money on injectors since Ive replaced all 8 of mine 2 - 3 at a time over the past year and a half, due to cold start running rough and hard to start issues. If I didnt plug my truck in if it got below 45* it would have to spin over for 2-3 MINUTES before it would start, then it would belch white smoke and skip under a load until it warmed up.

You rarely see anyone having issues with the glowplug system on a 6.0 on the diesel websites I mentioned, but you will see lots of hard start posts involving the HPOP, injectors, or the Injection Control Pressure sensor, or the Injection Pressure Regulator. All of that is expensive to just throw parts at I suggest taking it to a reputable shop to diagnose and then if you feel like repairing it yourself then go that route to save money

if it's belching white smoke after it starts thats another sign of glow plugs. they are suppose to keep working intermittingly after it cranks for the purpose of reducing smoke.once it starts watch your volt meter and you should see it pull the volts down for 20 or 30 seconds at a time.if not then that's proably the problem. those 6.0's must really be junk from all the stuff i've seen since they came out. i'm glad now i went to cummins now. have allways owned fords so hated to buy a dodge but ford had gotten out of hand on there prices.

Thanks for all of the info guys I have been so busy lately that i just now have had time to check my post. I have been asking around it seems that im the same type of answers which mean I need to take somewhere and a good diagnosis before I start throwing money I dont at it! Unlike a lot of 6.0 owners I have been very pleased with this truck this is really the only issues that i have had which I think that is not too bad! I will update everyone as to what I find out after further investigation.

Starting issue fixed

Just everyone know I have resolved my starting issue and yes you guys were correct the issue was the FICM: and yes that thing is damn expensive wtf:!!! apparently when the FICM goes bad it causes a lot of other codes to pop up because I got a list of about 12 or more codes right from the start! Now if I can get bounce back from the traumatizing experience of the FICM I have to service the tranny and fuel filters. Thanks again for all of the information it was huge help!

Darn that you didn't post here before replacing the FICM. You can go to the International dealer and get the FICM for about 50% of what Ford wants for it...

if it ever happens again, go to the dealer and tell them you want the latest heat induction flash. I was about to buy a FICM and he suggested that program and saved me some major money. 04 F-250 with 220,xxx still going

Tuck tail and run away....You'd be better off finding a clean 7.3
