Does anybody know if there is a lunch box Locker available for the front differential on my 2002 Explorer I know it's got a limited slip in the back that's working pretty good or does anybody think that a limited slip differential from a rear carrier would work in the front carrier of said truck? If it's even available that I can get it from a Boneyard I'd Rather Have The Lunchbox Locker if there's one available
Thanks everyone in the off-roading Community for all your great advice

I think @Oliver's can tell you all about that front end.

I'll let him share his experience in Marion, NC on that one....

That one was a Dana 28. The 04 also had a POS front diff, but it's not that big of a POS.

My pos was a 94, it was a 4.0 and iirc it had a D35 in the front. It was the rugged ridge hub that ended the day before it started though, what a shitty company they ended up being!

28 was found in Rangers and Bronco II. The 35 was considered a bolt in upgrade.:(

I've said it before, but I am going to say it one more time. Sell the Exploder and start with a vehicle like a Grand Cherokee that has solid axles front and rear and similar creature comforts to the Exploder if that is what you want in a wheeling rig.

.......Or just put a winch and good recovery points on it and see how far you can go (it may take you farther than you want to be like it is).

Sell the IRS to someone who wants to do a V8 swap in a Miata or something like that. Those IRS Explorer diff cases are awesome for that with the mounting ears on the diff cover. A few years ago I almost used one of those to do a RWD conversion on a WRX, because the 8.8 is a lot stronger than the R160 diff.

I see his point. AT it's BEST, he's looking at $2500 for his current rig

finding something reliable for that that's not a John Fuller special would be kinda hard for the same price point given everyone who wants to do what he's wanting is looking for the very same thing. "Run whatcha brung" would be a more economical choice (yeah I know...he's dropping $58k on a power wagon...but financing it makes it easier than dropping a wad of cash....that aside)

I agree about recovery and a winch. Plus...he'd learn a whole lot about what he NEEDS to actually wheel with after like 2 classes at UORTC

Sometimes you just don't know, what you don't KNOW yet

Right but on top of that $2,500 he is going to be another $2500 minimum into the explorer to get it locked and lifted. Id bet dollars to donuts for 45k he could get a much more capable rig than he will have after he does all that to the exploder.

And then it's going to break.

I mean, those things can't keep wheelbearings, CVs, or ball joints in them stock.

He won't be lifting it MUCH!! The ONLY option for the 02-05 exploders (as far as lift) is a body lift, and or 1.5"-2" spacers or coils, as the rear axles go THRU the frame and there's not a lot of room for angle change. And yes, Shawn is right....I've replaced the right rear wheelbearing 4 times in 187k miles, and recently both front, but the ball joints lasted 185k and I'm still on the stock CV's and I've bumped tire sizes to 255/70's about 2 years ago...I can't imagine what a set of 285/75's would do to it (like he's wanting)

While I can understand your desire to run what you brung, you need to listen to Ron and others.....a budget XJ would be a MUCH better platform.
