I just bought an 86 chevy shortbed 4x4 with dual tanks. I see that there is a switch for choosing either tank on the dash. Does the fuel gauge read whichever tank is selected or does it just tell you a mix of the two? How do I know when to switch from one tank to another? and can this be done while driving?

sorry if this question seems dumb but i've never had a vehicle with two gas tanks before. I guess that means that this truck gets really good gas milage :)

When you switch tanks the gauge will read how much is in that tank. So when you switch to the other tank it will read what is in that tank. You can switch tanks at any time driving or sitting still.
And sorry but it doesn't get any better gas mileage. You just don't have to stop as often for gas.

As far as knowing when to switch, Ive always run one tank down to 1/4, then switch over. Run that tank til empty, then have the 1/4 from the first tank to find a gas station.

..... and until you know that the transfer valve does infact work properly, carry a 5gal jug full with you, just incase ( been there done that)

Sometimes the gauge will change over, but the valve doesn't fully and you suck air or suck the original tank dry. I'd also try and dip both tanks to make sure they have both been used regularly and are not full of water
