Question about titling and tagging an old Jeep in NC?

Hey Guys,

So I picked up this 1973 CJ-5 that I'm currently working to get back on the road. I know I need to title it which I'm going to be doing here this week probably, but I wasn't going to tag it yet because well it's not ready to be on the road yet.

I was looking on DMV site, and correct me if I'm wrong here, but because the Jeep is older than 35 years, I don't have to get it to pass emissions OR get a safety inspection right?

Correct. You don't need any inspection at all on your 73. Additionally, think about getting antique tags, they'll greatly reduce your tax bill.

I thought with antique tags though it had to pass an inspection? At least that is how it was in Virginia last time I looked. I've only lived in North Carolina for just over a year now.
 
This exact conversation is dishing out in another active thread...:cool: Maybe a "stickie" is in need once all information is panned out...

If it is out-of-state, I was told by NC-DMV just 2 months ago by phone that you will need a safety inspection before they will re-issue a title no matter how old the vehicle is. After that, no more inspections needed if 35+. If in-state, no inspection needed for 35+ period.
And by ALLL means look into antique tags. My piece of shit is worth $2,500 now according to Durham. That was down from $12,000 initial before arguing. Durham has 3 booths set up specifically for lawyers to come in and negotiate a cost. I represented myself with a loving smile although I wanted to spill ALOT of personal opinion...:flipoff2:
Antique tags sets your limit at around $5-600 max? I can't remember... I just went along with my amount to see how it goes.

No inspection necessary in NC to get antique tags, just a short form to fill out. It saved me over $100/year on my CJ's taxes.

Yeah I'm going to be doing that, I need to see what Durham thinks my other vehicles are worth as well for that fact. Ugh. Now is an Antique plate something I have to find? Meaning do I have to go out and find a 1973 license plate to put on my CJ?

It's just a special plate that says Antique Auto, you don't need to run a 1973 plate (but can if you desire). Durham is insane with old car values. Before getting my antique plates they valued my '74 CJ5 at $12,300. The antique tags limit the taxable value to $500. Check out my old thread on it for more info, it includes links to the statute.
