I found a Dodge 2500 CTD for a really really good deal its a 99 and at a car lot, the guys say that the odometer stopped working with 160000 on it but they said the guy never said how long it hasnt worked my question is how could I find out how long it hasnt worked or the amount of miles on it? Im going to call them and see if I can get the guys number but if I cant can I just run the vin or something?

running a CarFax would give you an idea of when it hit 160,000...but there would be no way to figure out how many it really has...

you will never know. If this guy is a dealer he will also have to title it as ODOMETER DISCREPENCY and record that forever.

It also should show up in a carfax. This will drop after the vehicle is 10 years old.

That still is no indication. It could have frozen 2 years ago, the odometer would not have been documented untill the truck changes hands again.

A '99 truck has a digital odometer, and a bunch of other stuff wouldn't work right or at all if the speed sensor is bad.

I smell a rat.

If something's too good to be true, it probably is.

Can you check the hours on a 99? Don't know if that would be screwed up too but worth a shot. Click the key to the acc. on position then press and hold the button while its displaying mileage and after 4-5 seconds the hours should show up. Again, this may not work on 2nd gens and it may be screwed up anyway. Just an idea.

If the speed sensor was working at the time of failure the body computer should have actual mileage.
