Ok to start with my dad just got a 1988 GMC Jimmy in a trade. It has a 700r4 auto tranny, 350 engine, and 39.5 tsl's.The transmission only has about three weeks of service on it and it came from Autozone. It has a problem with the tranny. You can start down the road and after about 5 minutes of driving it starts acting like the tranny is slipping really bad. During the few minutes that it will run the tranny shifts and runs fine. If you shut the truck off and start it back up it will run fine for about 5 minutes then it starts messing up again. What could this be? I had a friend tell me it could possibly be that the torque converter was not filled up properly when it was installed. Could this be it? Any help would be appreciated.

Its got the stock gears in it whatever they are. My dad traded a fourwheeler for it and he is going to fix the tranny and sell it, so we are trying to figure out where to startso he can get it sold. The dipstick was showing full.

Stock gears (usually 3.08s or 3.73s) and 39.5s not good. Check the fluid condition. Sounds like its happening when it gets hot. Definately need a large tranny cooler on a 700r4 or it won't last.

"trailjeepman" had the same problem with a 727 I sold him. Turned out to be the shift linkage. He got it adjusted right and it's been fine ever since.

Yeah it feels like it has 3.08's cause its real sluggish. I know that that big of a tire is not good on the tranny but were not gonna wheel it its just gonna get fixed and sold to some poor kid that wants something to play in the mud with. We will probably switch it out for th350 and put the tranny cooler on it. Thanks for all the info.
