Axle in question: SD 60 front.
Material in question: cast/3/8" mild steel.
Machine: Esab stick run on 220v input.

So... If one was to securely stick weld 3/8" plate steel to the cast centersection on an axle, what would be the absolute best electrode(s) to use?

What I'm doing is shooting for eliminating the need for U-bolts on the front axle using the two piece plate and bolt design. The passenger side is all steel so it's no big deal. The driver side will be mostly all to cast. I want to get this one right. I've welded a few trusses and such to cast centersection with MIG and flux core using the pre-heat and re-heat slow cool process and fully intend to do the same here. With tons of options for electrodes, I thought I'd ask. Any help is greatly appreciated. If a 7018 will work ok, then I'm good to go.

Pre heat. Nickle rod. Post heat and slow cool.

Has always worked good for me.

I bet @Mac5005 coukd go in more detail and provide more technical info, like if nickel 55 is better than 99 and why

I'm here to learn and all ears!
