My brother in law is getting his license, and we found a 1988 Cherokee, it is a 2 door, 4.0, and a straight drive

I havent drove the Jeep yet, but the owner says it has a manual 4 speed transmission

I cant figure out what tranny that would be

t-4?

ax-15 i think
but its a 5speed? the 4.0 never had a 4speed. im pretty sure it only had the aw-4 and the ax-15. when you get away fromt he 4.0 some of the trannies get funky

X2 of the AX15, or possibly the NV3550

if the tranny was ever swapped out for some odd reason, to an older CJ tranny... it could be a number of things.... but a 4 spd was never the factory tranny behind a 4.0

The only 4-spd. that came on XJ's were the AX4 and the T4. But both, I believe, only were available '84-'86 with the 2.5L and the 2.8L.

A 1988 Cherokee would not have an AX-15 unless someone put one in it and the 4.0L I-6 never came with a 4 speed manual transmission unless someone put one in it. The only two transmissions that came in a 1988 Cherokee with the 4.0L I-6 would be the Aisin-Warner AW4 (4 speed automatic) transmission or the Peugeot BA-10/5 (5 speed manual) transmission.
