Measure the coax again,coax HAS to be in 3ft increments! You have to check the swr, swr needs to be at 1.5 or lower,antenna ground is critical. Don't operate till it's right or you can ruin the CB.

Not trying to prove right or wrong here because I used to think the same thing. The 3' increment thing is an old CB wives tale. Check this out for good reading:

It IS important to make sure the antenna and coax "match" though. That is where tuning an antenna to your system comes into play. What kind of antenna are you using? And yes, DON'T key up that microphone for any length of time until you get it set up correctly with the SWR below atleast 2. If the SWR is much above that, it can burn up the output finals in the radio.
 
Your antenna is probably not grounded well. I has to insulated from the mount so in other words the antenna can't have metal to metal contact with your vehicle. Most Antenna mounts come with a little plasitc insulator.
