qustions about dana 44

Brought home and tore down a dana 44 scout axle today only to find the carrier is a total wreck! The ring gear and pinion gear look good with no sign of broke teeth. The pinion bearing is also shot. What would cause this? The axle was free so i'm only out time.....

Low oil?

I'd guess low oil. Enough to keep the ring gear teeth lubed, but not enough to circulate reliably. Just guessing, not based on any experience or anything.

Screw it, time for a Detroit and pitch the junk gears anyway.

Just gotta make absolutely sure everything else is in good shape

I guess that's the plan.....Need a lower gear anyhow. Carrier was in bad shape and the spider gears fell out as I turned the pinion. Have not removed carrier yet.....hope case is okay!
