Random Thoughts.....

Because it costs money?
Maybe. A set is $40 so I guess that figures in somewhere subliminally. For me, its more that I get used to the slow decline in cut quality until I finally get fed up and change them. Then I am back to where I was yesterday and am kicking myself for nit changing them a month ago 😅

I have the Vevor copy of this blade sharpener and I can do a set in just a few minutes

This one gives you a proper 30 degree angle and keeps the end square which is important. But I get that too, use what you got. I am sharpening 3-8 sets at a time so the jig is nice and the wheel cuts great.
The square end has got to be what makes the difference some how. I can sharpen a set pretty decent with the grinder but with all the sand we have, the ends are always rounded off. Freshly sharpened blades are obviously better than not, but they still arent as nice as brand new ones.

And for a homeowner running one mower - I’ll pay $40 for a new blade and cut the time by 2/3rds over sharpening blades and getting them almost god as new. By the time you factor in time and grinder consumables…its a case of beer difference and brand new blades just do seem to cut better

You see, here’s where I thought you of all people would have said, I’ll pay someone to cut my grass. The time it takes to do all that, I loose my weekend and it’s not worth it. I’ve been saying that for several years now. It took me 2-3 hours to cut the grass and trim the hedges and clean up…EVERY WEEKEND. I chose to pay someone $120/mo and I went t fishing.

Yeah. Id hate to pay what my wife insists we mow. I could bail hay.
Im in Andy's camp. I quite enjoy making things sharp. I use flap wheels. I'm also the guy who has a chainsaw grinder, knife sharpeners and a kid who could shave with his trusty hatchet. Turtle heads came right off!

once the blade is off, 2 mins of a quick edge on 4 sides and back on

negligilble wear on a grinder blade

$39.98 in your pocket, and less waste to deal with

When we moved 2 years ago - I moved into camp hire a lawn guy.

I used to be Sling Blade OCD on blade sharpening. I have another sharpener that will get them stupidly sharp but it was slow. But damn the cutting edges were perfect. That sharpener was 15-20 minutes for a 3 blade set. This one is maybe 5 minutes max.

Man i guess I'm the only one that has a ruff potholed yard. Im running a mower i found in the shed 5 years ago. Repalced the blades ones. Broke 7-8 spindles now and had to beat the deck back "straight" earlier this year after a tire dropped into a hole and bent everything up

This! I put new blades on and hit a rock in about the first 10 ft. I don’t know how but it happens.

When do you drink beers and listen to podcasts totally uninterrupted though?
This is still a little off. My wife mows 90 percent of the time. She told our kids when they were younger if you aren't bleeding or puking leave me alone when I am mowing.

Ditto.
Several years ago I was having trouble w an old riding mower kid down the street and his brother (who were like 12 and 14) knocked on the door asking if they could mow my grass. Like 40 bucks or something including edgi. I said, fuck it, sure. No longer my problem. Then at the end of the season kid asked if he could buy the non-running mower. I told him you can have it for 6 free mows. Next year he'd raised price slightly but honored our deal. That got me through a good bit of summer and I never looked back.
I think about all the time I used to spend working on a pos mower and still not having a great cut, plus the sweat and stress.... Worth every penny.

I'm 100% a DIY guy but that's another case where it ain't worth it. I'll happily motivate a neighbors kid.

And now my son is back home while job hunting so guess who does it and it's still not my problem

I enjoy cutting grass (when the mower runs right :shaking:). I cut my yard and 2 neighbors for $100/month each. No weedeating or anything else. Combined they are less than a half hour each week. Just sit on my chariot and chop grass at 12mph and 72” wide.

When we moved for “reasons” we couldn’t take the mower.

A good mower was going to cost 5k. Then add in my time, gas oil, blades etc .

At 75/week the ROI with no time paybakdnwa years

Ya see, I gave up self mowing when I moved to Florida (the first time) and… well… you ever tried push mowing St. Augustine grass? FAWK THAT!
