looking into painting my 88 toyota. not wanting to spend a fortune on a nice paint job that i will be scared to take down through the thicket. what is the best brand on spray paint for the job?

In the infamous words of Ian from xTreme 4x4...

"There's nothing finer than bedliner"

I used Plasticote from Wal-mart. It was fairly cheap and got a couple of extra cans for touch up later on. It had some DDF (Distance Distortion Factor) in it, but looked pretty good for doin it in my garage over the weekend without so much as washing the truck. The old red paint was so fuzzy I didn't even have to sand it.

And fer gawds sakes get one of those trigger things that clip onto the top of the can! My index fingers and thumbs were sore for 2 weeks afterwards!

should i go with a gloss, semi or flat? how will it do over time as far as fading? do i need to sand the existing paint? any pictures?

I have found it best to sand with 300 grit between coats and use flat paint I use .98 cent flat black or krylon
Here is my xj i sprayed OD green

And yes all were done with spray cans

yup, gloss. next time i'll spray some clear over it. fades pretty quick, but it does sit out in the sun...

I did mine two tone, silver+black like state vehicles, don't know how well it holds up, but FWIW, the rustoleum sprays on more evenly and less likely to leave lap marks than krylon.. but that may have been differences in application temperatures.

man how are yall gettin so good of paint jobs with rattle cans!!! i sprayed my yota with flat black in my driveway. used 99 cent paint the frist time, used about 100 or 11 cans and ran out and only did the passenger side, grill, tailgate and about a foot up the bed. that cheap paitn goes reaaal quick. then i used Krylon. yea its got tiger stripes, but if i wanted it to look good i wuundt have rattle canned it. after a year or so, my front fenders and hood have faded alot. you can tell in teh second pic how the front has faded from engine heat

if i were to do it again, id get a Herculiner kit from tractorsupply and bedline the whole thing and be done. i think you can get red black or gray. the kit with everything you need is about 100 bucks. i put it on my floorboards 3 coats and still had over 3/4 of the gallon left

I just rattle canned my xj... I sprayed the whole thing with bedliner and then sanded it down to remove some of the texture leaving a nice hammered look. Then I top coated it with Krylons Outdoor Spaces Satin Moss Green and satin black.

Here's a few before during and after shots... Sorry for the lousy pic quality, they're taken with my phone.

Zac Brown. And he is a Land Cruiser guy. Apparently Bob(?) Taylor(of Taylor guitars) is building an FJ80 for him.

I used a quart of rustoleum white and a harbor freight paint gun to spray my trailer white to match my truck. I think it looks really good and is easy to ytouch up and cheaper and less time consuming than spray cans.

My advice ,.. since i paint... use 400 grit sanding after its wet ... let dry.. use self eching primer for your finish coat to stick too... that way it dont just ding off or peel..

remember... use and oil base primer and paint ...

other wise it will just come off.
