I have a 96 jeep cherokee, I just bought. There is a rattle that is coming from the back side of the engine. I read a post on youtube about a rattle and one guy said it was his flywheel bolts were loose on his jeep. He took off the little cover that exposed his flywheel and saw the loose bolts.
My question is, how hard is it to take that cover off? Do you have to take the starter off also? Do you have to also drop the oil pan to get to those bolts? He said it only took 45 mins.
I don't want to start taking bolts off and get over my head.
Any info will help. Thanks

Not too hard. Yes you will have to drop the starter. No to the oil pan. Just have an extra hand to turn the harmonic balancer with a ratchet and socket to get to the bolts. Good luck, and hope this helps.

The harmonic balancer is the pulley under the water pump. It is attached to the crankshaft and to the flywheel/torque convertor. The harmonic balancer turns all of this. Also sounds like you need a repair manual like Haynes or Chilton's or both to locate parts. Both in combination are better than seperate.

IT WORKED!!!!! I had a rattle, I bought this jeep super cheap because the owner thought that it was going to throw a rod. I did a little research online...one guy wrote to tighten 4 bolts on the flywheel and all is gone.
This jeep purrs like a kitten...I can't believe it!!!!!
Thank you for your help.

Glad I could help. I do what I can on my 91 Cherokee and 88 Wagoneer Limited(XJ). When I get stuck on what to do, I use my husband for how-to info, but not to often.
