Rear end Popping

So, I'm new to 4x4's in general so this may be a simple question, I don't know. I just got a 85 4runner and when I make a sharp turn, such as pulling into a parking space, the rear end make a loud popping noise like it's getting jammed up or something.

Is this from the diff? I've driven cars with posi and never had this happen. Thoughts?

Man, and I thought this thread was going to be about disciplining your children...

Could be a Lockrite or similar locker, but those are generally more of a click. If it only occurs when turning, it likely has to do with the spider gears. Could be wheel bearings or u-joints, but I would think you would hear either of those when going straight at slow speeds also. Since the spider gears only move when turning, they seem like a good culprit.

Well obviously it could be a couple different things, so If I where you, I would go ahead and pull the cover off, or pull the 3rd member out, and take a look just to make sure. It is going to be obvious if it is that loud. And it will only cost a few bucks in gear oil if nothing is wrong, and you do indeed have a locker.

Is a locker a diff that is never open? It is possible that it has one I guess because the truck is modded a little. I bought it with a 3" body and 3" suspension lift and 35x15 super swampers.

Did a little searching on Yotatech and it sounds like I may have a "lunchbox" style of locker. They ratchet and click when doing 90 degree and u turns and can jolt the rear end.

cant you just jack up the rear and spin the tires? if open the tires spin opposite and locked they spin the same? or does that only work on a spool?

You can try that method but most of the time a lunchbox style locker responds and locks up under torque load so it will spin or ratchet freely when both tires are off the ground.
