Need to do this too.

Possible for a weekend mechanic to do, or does it require special tools and all that? Any tips?

EDIT*

Should mention, its a 98 TJ. Turdy5 in the rear.

Most the time a pinion seal goes to leaking because their is a bad pinion bearing. If you have to pull the pinion out and change a bearings you will need a dial indicator to set the backlash. I think it is 8 to 10. When you tighten up on the crush collar don't over do it. If you get it to tight it will make the pinion bearings go out again. Alot of things can go wrong with a leaking seal. If you catch it in time you can sometimes save the gear. When the pinion bearings go out the pinion falls deeper in the ring gear, and when you correct the problem you can get gear wine. If you have caught it in time, and you think the gear will be fine I would change the carrier bearings too.

dont even attempt it, it will only end with you ruining your gear setup and having to get new gears. let the leak ride till you can have a competent shop replace it.

you won't need to reset backlash on the 35, it would be a good idea to replace the pinion bearings and you will need a new crush sleeve. find Will's (will@rockbottom4x4) number hes up there and can do it for you. the hard part is getting the bearings off youll need a press and a bearing splitter at the minimum. preload on the pinion bearings should be around 14inch lbs a beam style inch lb torque wrench would be required. of course this is the right way to do it. you could back the nut off pull flange remove seal, replace seal, put yoke back on don't overtighten the nut, this usually does not have good results but some have reported success.
