I have an idea enough to kow that I would like to regear. I am running stock 3.55 gears in my 99 XJ but would like to upgrade to 4.10's or 4.56's. someone help me out.

Is it ok to only regear the rear diff? How will this effect the the 4x4 capabilities? Maybe someone could let me have a good link to some gearing info; that would be wonderful.

It is OK to regear only the rear diff if you pull the front driveshaft out. Otherwise, with the front and rear diff geared differently, the diffs will turn at different speeds and something in the drivetrain will have to give, read break! Generally 4x4 vehicles regear both front and rear diffs to the same gear ratio at the same time, otherwise you cannot use your 4x4 capabilities.

what tire size are you running and is this a daily driver? those two things makes a big difference.

your gears have to be within a range of .03, that's about the max difference they can be. for example you can run 4.10's & 4.11's but not 4.10's & 4.56

I can't add any more useful info other than to say you have to regear both axles to use your 4wd. Basically, your front tires will try to spin faster than the rears, in effect, dragging the rear tires across the ground. Does that make sense?

i have 33's and i am about to put 4.56 in my 2000 4.0 XJ.

ill let you drive it around later if you ever are in raleigh

i also have 33's and am going from 3.55's to 4.56's
for the rear you will need ring, pinion, and install kit.
for the front you will need all this and a new carrier to hold the larger ring gear. I think anything lower (numerically) than 4.56 won't require a new carrier.
