I have a 1991 Cherokee and I'm wanting to remove the doors on it. I've looked on a bunch of sites but I haven't really found the answer yet because most sites say that to remove the doors you have to do some cutting. Is this necessary? Are there any sites with a step by step tutorial on how to remove the doors? Thanks for the help!

wait for 99ncxj to chime in, i believe he has done some sort of door mod to his xj.

You dont HAVE to do any cutting really...

I just punched out the pins and found some long bolts that would go in place of the pins.

These bolts are removable and allow you to take the doors off and put them on at your convenience.

It takes me about 15 minutes to take all 4 doors off and unplug all wiring harnesses.

*NOTE*, you WILL need to grind one side of the head of the bolts flat in order to allow it to slide in and out more easily due to clearance issues.

Are you trying to remove them permanently...or for the entire summer? If so...no real reason to make "removable" doors. Just unbolt them.

if you unbolt them you will have a hard time getting them lined back up right again. If you have a 97 or older xj, you can punch the center pin out and replace it with a 1/4" tractor type pin from john deer store. You do have to grind down the side of the pin head so it will clear the door sheet metal. If you have a 98 or newer xj you can cut the pin from the middle and drive out each half out the top/botom. for 98's and up you will need a 5/16 or 3/8 pin...can't remember off the top of my head.

anyways, once you get the old ones out and the new pins in if you have "sagging" doors and they don't close right, you can take the shim out from behind the 3 bolts from the top hinge and add it to the bottom hinge. worked great on mine and they close like they did from the factory. It only takes about 5 min to unplug the wiring for mirrors, speakers and door locks and pull the pins out. Just be sure to roll down the back windows before you disconnect the front door plugs. If not, you won't get the back windows to roll down until you put your front doors back on...don't ask me how i figured that one out.

Here is an old pic of mine without front doors:

The plugs are behind the lower kick panels, behind the fuse door on the left side and and the same location on the opposite side. The driver side is not bad (3 plugs), the passenger (5 plugs iirc) are a beech.

I couldn't get the pin out of mine and had to cut the bottom of the hinge. Mine sag a little now too. I am gonna get a cage and make the rear removeable too.
