I got a 77 chief and I wana start getting the body ready to throw some primer on there. How much of the original paint should I remove and what kind of sander is best for this. Also should I approach the areas with surface rust any different? Any input will be greatly appreciated!!!!

a media blaster is best..

Media definitely best if you are going bare...

If not just block it and shoot some primer...

As to cancer spots, Id say treat same...if its so bad that blasting cuts it, it needed repair anyway

media blasting with walnut shells or soda blasting is probably the best. This however is not cheap. You could also use aircraft stripper to take it to bare metal but this is messy. What condition is the paint in now? Are you planning on repairing the rust spots? What quality paint job are you wanting to get? Primer is not something you want to spray on and then drive with. It does not seal so it will absorb water and dirt. If you just want a flat look and you are not planning on repairing the rust spots then I would just sand it with a sanding block. You are basically just trying to score the surface and get rid of any bumps or ridges. Then clean and spray.

Thanks guys, the paint condition as it sits is not very bad at all and the cancer spots are not major. The jeep dont run and wont for prolly 2 more years but its sitting in my feild under a tarp and i just wana get it covered with some paint to help with preventing rust. As for the final paint job I dont want any thing nice because its going to get messed up. I wana use kubota orange tractor paint for the final product. As for blocking it what is the ideal grit to use. Thanks again yall for the input!

Where can you buy this?

Usually at clubs near the airport.

:flipoff2:

At any AA, AZ, NAPA, hell I think I have even seen it in WalMart.

It is sold under a few different names. I have had best results with aerosol varieties.
