I have a '93 Yj with the 30r auto tranny (999), will a TF727 replave the 999 and still bolt up to the NP 231? I know the 727 has a reputation of being the heavy duty tranny over the 999, but even if it is a direct bolt up is it worth doing vs. the bow tie route?

I also have a np231D heavy from a 2000 dodge ram
23 spline input $150 if you want to beaf up the t-case

No, My 999 is ok for the most part. When it's cold in the mornings it takes a few seconds to "slide" into forward or reverse, but once it's warmed up, it goes great. Run it back and forth between Florida and WNC all the time, with "narry" a problem, so cant complain, just wondering for "when" it does go, if I should /could replace it with the more heavy duty 727.

Since you are running a 4 liter, I would stick with the 999. Its a good medium duty tranny and can be built fairly strong. I had a 904 (non lock up version of the 999) behind a stroked and bored 4.2 liter and it held up just fine. I wouldn't put a 727 in unless you had a V8. You do have to becareful because there are amc and chrysler versions of 727's and if you get the wrong one then it becomes a major headache.

you'll also need to relocate the crank sensor to the front of the motor (hesco) or drill a hole etc in the 727 IIRC
