My Jeep (Wrangler) broke down in Winston. I rolled it to the nearest shop and then drove home to Raleigh. They called me this morning with an initial statement that it looks like the front differential and that it would be $1800.

I now want to view this as an opportunity. As long as I'm forking over insane amounts of money, I'd like to upgrade to a selectable front differential. I also have to regear both front and rear as I moved to 33" tires from 33".

Does anybody know a shop around Winston that can do this work for me? I'd like it if it was a shop accustomed to doing this kind of work. (I think the shop I'm at now is used to making cars run again.)

WOW! I'll do it for 1500.00....

No really what about the front differential is messed up and would cost 1800.00? You could pick up a brand new D30 or Rubicon 44 w/ factory air locker and 4.10's for that or less....

Hey guys....

The Jeep is in my garage. I noted (exactly as stated above) that I could buy a hell of a lot of upgraded equipment for that same price. He didn't charge me for the diagnosis.

I'm gonna give a look around Raleigh now. I've heard that regearing (which has needed to be done anyway) has a very tight tolerance, so I'll just get it all taken care of at once.

Thanks!

So - I guess new question: any good 4x4 specific shops in Raleigh that anybody can recommend?

There are several great vendors who support this board and all have excellent reputations here.
"Greg Slade" is the Store manager there and he is a good guy. "Lee" is his shop manager both are on the board frequently.
"Chase" Perry @ Perryman Auto is in Durham Rt98/Sherron Rd (Miami Ave Ext) he does a lot of axle jobs at great prices.
Alpha4wd is a new vendor to the board. They support many of the local clubs and many people have said good things about them.
