I am installing some 4.10 gears in a 83 Cj7. I am putting a detroit in the front and a open carreir in the rear. Does anybody know of place where i can get step by step instructions on how to accomplish this? I can do motor swaps and rebuilds but i have never installed new gears. Thanks any help or tips would be awesome.

For a single ring/pinion, the specialized tools will cost more than hiring somebody to do it. They include a press, dial (not click) inch pound torque wrench, dial indicator, and a handful of semi-normal tools including a torque wrench.

If you decide to have it done PM me and I can give you Kevin Watts' contact info. He does a perfect job every time and he's the only guy I go to. I have no financial interest with him, I'm just a happy customer.

There are other good people on the board too but I don't have any experience with them.

We get into this every now and then. There are two schools of thought: no way I'm not touching it let someone else do it and it's just machinery and tools I can do it. I go to the second school, I like to do things myself and that's where I get my satisfaction in our sport. The pirate link in an excellent reference and with your experience, some reading and a little patience you should be able to do the job. For first timers I think patience and the willingness to tear everything down and start over if it isn't right, are the keys. Sometimes I can get it right in a couple of tries, it has taken me 10 or more. I find you can get by with a dial indicator and stand, good dial calipers, an " and # torque wrench and a lot of patience. Good luck!

Thanks for all your help. CYJ we are on the same page. there is only one way to learn and that is by doing it. I would have it done but i needed to order two dust covers for the axle tube and the only place to get it is from JEEP. The axle is gutted and cleaned and ready to go. jsut need those seals. I will let yall know how it goes. Thanks
