Thinking about another road trip out west. Thinking about Denver CO to Ski this winter. Anyone else go on any long roadtrips? Was looking at driving it in two days out and same back last time it was 17 hrs the first day and about 10 the next day but never shut the Dodge off on the way back tring to keep infront of the storm took 36 hrs on the way back. That had to be the longest time I have driven in my life. Did 500-600 miles in 4x4.
Looked up airfare and rental and its still cheeper to drive. Thinking it will do about $500 to $600 for fuel and the tickets were 2 @ $450 each then add $600-$800 per week for a rental plus I was told they now charge for Skis, or anything more then 2 bags. Time is not really a big thing, last time we did the trip for little over 3 weeks and was thinking about the same this time.
Anyone else like going on long trips like this? Whats your limit before you just say BS and I will just fly? Still going to check on some cheep tickets but I loose about the same time driving as in an airplane and your not all around people that are sick. 4-5 years back me and the wife got sick the day after we got off the plane and it just killed the trip.

The wife and I use to go on a lot of trips. We normally drove because it is so much easier when you get there. YOu get your own car. All your stuff is there for us it just makes it easier.

We drove to CO a couple of summers ago. Most of the people I work with looked at me like I was from Mars when I told them about it. My family has always loved to travel and I don't mind the drive. To me, seeing the scenery along the way is half the fun of the trip.

It would be nice sometimes to just hop on a plane, but with a family of 4 and 2 dogs to board, I haven't seen a trip yet where we didn't come out ahead by driving it. Even if I had the extra money, I think I'd rather throw it in an RV and really enjoy the trip.

We When up to Lansing MI to get the camper over the 4th. 800 miles each way. With the lid it took 2 days up and 2 days back. For some reason a 1.5 yr old does not like to ride more than 2hours at a time :driver:

I flew back there to get a car last summer and drove back. Took 2 1/2 really hard days. I was just ready to be home. If I had the time, I'd drive and stay of the inerstates, see the sights along the way, eat at the mom and pop places, stay in mom and pop hotels and then go four wheeling in the rockies...in my own truck. Forget those 14-17 hour days behind the wheel!

If money was no object, I'd fly and have my truck shipped.

Two friends and myself just returned a few weeks ago from a wheeling trip to Colorado and Moab. We were gone two weeks and got in 10 days of wheeling. We rode the following:

Carnage Canyon and Iron Chest at Buena Vista
Independence at Penrose
Ophir pass, Imogene Pass, and Engineer Pass out of Silverton
Die Trying and another trail at Montrose
Moab Rim trail
Prichert Canyon
Helldorado
Hells Revenge
Poatato Salad Hill

I said that to say this: If you want to get a wheeling trip together going out west, give me a call. I will go if I can work it in. The drive is not bad.

That's what I'm talking about. I grew up on the other side of the mountain from Silverton. In Ouray. If I was going to move back there it would be to Silverton. Super cool little town that the Californians don't want to live in cause they can't get their lexus out of the garage in the winter time. (hell, can't get anything out of the garage in the winter time some years.)

If I went Larry I think I would need more than two tanks on my Van! I guess the up coming Harland ride will give me a good indication of my fuel usage vs miles.

could be the being strapping a 5 point harness and immoble that whole time, of course then, there is the only real view is dads ugly mug in the rear view or the back of the front seat ( how about that for chioces? )

Trips with Toddlers are always a treat, definatly adds too the time factor.

coloring supplies are a GREAT help, but then they get bored with those and throw them at the driver while kicking the back of moms seat. Good times !!

I've done that trip 3 times now. I've split it up just about every way you can imagine, short of driving it all at once. And honestly, that's the one thing I would like to try. I'd need a couple of drivers... and plenty of room for everyone to stretch out. But hell, Moab is only about 32 hours away. You could leave town before daybreak on Friday and be in town by lunch on Saturday.

Two days to Denver is tough. Doable, but tough. And that's really the problem -- I either want to get there as quickly as possible, or I want to take some time and see the sights along the way. Kansas from I-70 is pretty and all, but after you've seen it, you've seen it.

The last couple of times we've gone, we've left in the afternoon and aimed for Nashville or thereabouts. It gets you 550mi from home on the first day, gets most of the "familiar" territory behind you. Even if you left after work, you could still shoot for Knoxville. Get a hotel for the night (Motel 6 :huggy:), and start the "trip" in the morning.
