im thinking about making a bar to go inside my xj. i saw some black iron pipe thats pretty cheap at lowes. its 1 1/4 dia. would that be strong enough? and where could i get it bent fairly cheap? thanks for any input

Ummm, I'm pretty sure you don't bend black iron pipe.
You'll want to either find some hrew of dom STEEL tubing and then work with that.

Steve

Search here on the subject.
Pipe vs tube has been discussed over and over and over and over and over and over

but hey, what's one more time?

I would go with atleast 1 1/2 but some people say it wont hold up but it will. I have seen :poop: pipe take more abuse than 120 wall tube with out denting or bending. Besides its better than what you have now.

After saying that - this is a little different, being an inside cage... in theory, if the situation arises that it's being used, the body will be providing some support first, unlike the usual TJ scenerio.

id stay away from black iron it will crack and is a mess to work with any way. if u just want some extra protection without paying dom. price get hrew from steel yard its prob. cheaper than lowes pipe anyway .if u do use hrew most places measure from inside so ask for 1.25 sch.40 its close to 1 9/16 od x.120 thick . im sure ill get flamed for not telling u to use dom or u will die.

I'm sorry I went to Wyotech, I believe in a good cage. If you can't build it yourself, and can't afford someone else to build it the way you want, find a good kit. Spend some money on safety, it's cheaper in the long run. Try poison spider or rusty's.

What are you going to attach the bar to?

XJs being uniframe means you'll want to tie anything that's supposed to support a rollover into a subframe of some sort.

My suggestion is to get outside help and open up your wallet if this is something that you really want for safety's sake. If you just want to slap something in there for looks, use black iron. Hell, use foam pipe insulators and spraypaint 'em chrome...

i was thinking either put a 6x6 or so plate on both sides of the body. or using ubolts around the frame rails and plates on the inside.i really dont care if its dom or not.anything is better than whats there now.

PM PJ at M and M offroad. He can get ypu what you need(DOM or Hrew), he gets enough in volume to get a better price. He can also help with building and advice. Great person to deal with. mpistolpj is his screen name.

Not true. If you put an inferior cage in there, and it fails miserably, it can hurt you while trying to occupy the space you are in. Don't skimp on safety!!!! If you can't afford to be safe than you can't afford to wheel
