I HAVE JUST PUT MY JEEP ON THE ROAD AND IT RUNS HOT.THE MOTOR IS A 304 BORED .030 OVER.I LOOKED AT THE PIPES AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT 45MIN AND THEY WERE A LIGHT GREY.THE NEXT DAY I DROVE IT AROUND LOCALLY AND IT WAS ALOT OF START AND STOPPING AND IT DIDNT RUN AS HOT.AND THE PIPES WERE A LITTLE DARKER GREY THAN BEFORE.IT HAS A NEW WATER PUMP AND A STOCK RADIATOR. DO I NEED TO TRY A BETTER RADIATOR OR THINK IT MAY BE TOO LEAN????:huggy:

What about the T stat? Is it new? It'll run a bit warmer during break in period. It'll be hard to tell mixture problems by looking at the exhaust pipes this soon. Especially if they aren't new also. Is it reading hot on the temp gauge or is it boiling over? You could try richening it up a bit ans see if it makes a difference. Also flex fan or clutch fan or electric? Does it overheat sitting in traffic or on the highway? It's really nothing to be yelling about though...

Check your timing, double check for vacuum leaks which can make it run lean. Are you using the 6 cyl 2 row radiator? Which fan are you using? Is it running warm all the time , or just at low speed?

Please turn off caps lock.
If you need I am also in reidsville and can look it over for you. PM me for my phone #.

i dont really know what the timming supposed to be set at.as far as fans it has double flexlite fans on the radiator (pull type).carb is a 600cfm elderbrok it seems to run hotter the futher i drive without stopping. the temp probe is in the top of the intake using autometer gauges. by looking at the gauge it gets around 200-210 around town.its not boiling out.but if i cut it off its harder to crank.normally it cranks right up.

That's possibly it! Without a T-stat your coolant will move too fast at higher RPM,s for the radiator and air to do any good before it goes back in the motor.

2x put the t stat back in it and check back.

Read your plugs. Take them out & clean them with a small wire brush, taking care not to change the gap. After driving it at 40 - 50 MPH for a while, pull off the road & take out a plug or two.

They should be a light chocolate color. If they are white then it's too lean. Black is either too rich, or oil fouling.

Also i was gonna say that Detroit engines sometimes have shavings of metal left in the water jacket.

This steel wool like material will slow or Block the flow of water, & the fix is to remove the freeze plugs & fish that crap out of there with a coat hanger & a garden hose.

But you say it was bored over, & a real machine shop wouldn't leave anything in the water jacket.
