Im about to buy some doors off ebay. Doors are not cheap so this is a significant amount of money. The guy selling them only accepts cashiers check or money orders. Is this a safe way of paying him? Would you pay for stuff with that method? What can I do to make the transaction safer?

Thanks..

Rod

Does he not accept Pay pal?? You might suggest using that method.

Money orders are OK, get a USPS one, and mail it to him via USPS. If he tries to screw you, it's a federal crime, and the postal inspector will come a knockin'...

yeah do paypal, dont use cashiers or money order, you have a better chance of getting screwed that way, paypal has a money back guarantee...

actually postal money order is the safest way to go... It's gaurenteed funds (for him) so he can ship the item immediatly. AND if you are defrauded in anyway it involved using the post office and it becomes a federal crime. I usually do NOT use PayPal for large items as PayPal has proven to be unreliable and hard to file claims agains...

Bad synerio with paypal:
Buy item. Seller sand bags for 2-3 weeks. (sends via post office aka 4-6 weeks)
week 3 you contact paypal, they say wait longer
week 4 you passed the 30 day mark to submit a grievance.
ebay doesnt seem to care. oh by the way guess who owns pay pal... (ebay)

Id just send the money order :)

also......

other than someone simply not sending the item, how do you get screwed with a money order?

Also please point me to the nearest Pay Pal office I can go into and speek to someone if things go bad and i need help...

Or, have him post it on the PBB, and buy it off there. He would be well advised to not to try and Wenzel you..

another vote for MO,

[:hi-jack:] Rich, what happened over on PBB? saw some mention of it, but didn't get a chance to figure it out before the site went down. [/:hi-jack:]

It'll be back up soon...

Cliffs notes- 18-year old kid posted gearset, advertised as new, for $100 +shipping. Guy said ok, sent check for $115. Kid changed his mind, said he wanted $125+ shipping. Guy said no thanks, gimme my money back. Kid backed down, said he would send gears, and oh by the way, they're not new, they "look new". Guy refuses shipment from UPS, and kid would not refund money.

Long story short, the kid's pictures, address, satellite photo of his house, license plate, phone number, Dad & Mom's biographies & pictures, most of his social Security #, and every board he's a member of have been posted. He's fooked, and I love it.

Reason: his shitty attitude, and his "I'm anonymous on the Internet" comments..

HA! glad to hear he got what he deserved.

but, why did the PBB need to be shut-down for it?

edit: back up now, i'll find out for myself. thanks again for the cliff notes

Always check a sellers rating. If he doesn't have many transactions or some bad feedback be cautious or avoid. If the seller has a high feedback rating or one of those power sellers who have done hundreds or thousands of transactions I'm sure you're safe. Foutunately I have never had any problems on ebay, buy I won't make big purchases with seller who has bad feedback or few transactions - 10 or less.
One of my neighbors told me about some special debit card or something like that just for online shopping. You get on line or call your bank and transfer x amount of $ to make your transaction and thats it. Supposed to protect you from having an account wiped out, or maxed out. The Money order is always a very good idea.

Speaking of which.... don't see this often:

Many people don't like to receive $$ via PayPal b/c they charge a fee to receive it (unless sender does it directly from their PP account). It's like 3.5% or something so if the amount is big it is a noticeable loss.

We recenlt had somebody bail/vanish on an eBay transaction, had to complain to PayPal. It took a couple weeks but we did get some $$ back - basically PP gave us everything in the "buyer's" account, unf this wasn't the whole balance we paid though - they (PP) claim they are fuether pursuing, but who knows what power they really have.
