One of my friends is looking at a truck with a salvage title? Is there a way to find out what happened to the truck to get a salvage title? Are they hard to insure? Do people on the board stay away from anything with a salvage title as a DD? thanks for help:beer:

Most of the vehicles I have owned have had salvage titles. Its very economical since they are cheaper than good titles, and as long as you know the full story from Carfax (NOT from whoever you buy it from) I think it's fine. You should probably pay a little more attention to make sure it was rebuilt correctly. I usually keep my vehicles until they are junk anyway, so the lower resale value doesn't bother me much.

Keep in mind too, if the vehicle is of little KBB value, a salvage title or "total loss" can come from a fairly minor acident - repair costs, based on full-repair estimate from a shop (or adjuster) only has to be 75% of vehicle's value... so if the Jeep was only worth say 2k at the time, $1500 repair would deem it "totaled" - that can be pretty much anything.

Yes, my last car, an Acura, was hit in a parking lot that took out only the front corner (bumper, headlight, hood and fender) the headlight (HID) assembly complete was $1800 alone. They totalled it, but the car still drove straight with no coolant or A/C leaks. Someone got a great fixer upper.

I got rid of it because I could no longer carry comp./collision with a salvage title. So if I fixed it and anyone else hit me they would only give me $1500 for the whole car! That wouldn't even cover another headlight! Kind of sad cause it was a good car.
